Kenan Advantage training

    Good morning. I am going to start training for gas hauling with Kenan Advantage in Toledo, OH on July 8th. Are there any company drivers out there that have been thru the training and can tell me what to expect. Any and all answers are appreciated. Thanks.

    I thought about asking some of the Kenan drivers I see at the loading racks, but with that attitude, I just can't find it in my heart to do so.

    I don't know about the training. But I have heard the hours are brutal and the pay is lower than its competitors. Of course you can find that just looking around these forums! Good luck.

    Thanks, gear grinder. I am training in Ohio but I will be working out of Midland, MI. The two gentleman I spoke to said I won't make less than 1 K per week even during the slow season. Hours are 5 am to 5 pm or vice versa.

    Not too worried about the money, just will be nice to be home every. That is, if I like the job. From what I have heard and read, most drivers either absolutely love gas hauling or hate it. :biggrin_25526:

    I have been with Kenan (KAG West) since February of last year. I can tell you this. I love the job and I am not going anywhere any time soon. The training was about 3 weeks long. There is alot to take in. For me, most of my previous experience is in either Food Service Delivery or Long Hauls. I was looking for something I could do that wasn't as physical as my previous jobs. I injured my back and blew out my hip doing the food service deliveries. So, this was perfect for me. In all honesty, the hours are not as bad as some here are saying. I work a 6 days on 3 days off rotation. The checks fluctuate a little bit because of that. But, I average about 50-55 hours a week. And the pay is actually about even with all the other companies when you take into account benefits and such. I love that this job is relatively stress free. I don't take my job home and there are no egos among management and other drivers. I am sure this depends on location. Usually, anyone who comes in with a ego or power trip they are quickly escorted out the door. Most of management and dispatch were also drivers. So, when I have a complaint they know exactly where I am coming from.

    The training is all about learning the correct way of doing things. Establishing a routine. Getting certifications at the different racks that included loading and unloading and some classroom time. Just take it all in. Takes notes if you need to and ask questions. When I started I met a couple drivers who are in their mid 70s and thought. If they can do this I can do this. In our division our oldest driver is 76. :D I have been more of a lurker here. But, if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

    Thanks, Fordwheeler, I appreciate you taking the time to post a response. Today was my second day of training and everything is just as you wrote. Everybody is pretty laid back and there is some work involved but I like that. Got sick of just sitting and holding the steering wheel the last two years hauling milk.

    I agree that it is pretty stress free, although I, obviously, have not had to maneuver around uncooperative customers at gas stations yet, but as far as the work goes, if you are the type of person that likes to do your job and go home, I have found that you will do well at this job. There is no stress of dealing with grumpy, lazy and just plain idiotic receivers and that is what I have enjoyed the most.

    My hours are most likely going to be 5 pm to 5 am and I don't mind that at all. Lots of room to get in and out of the stations at night and less traffic on the highways and at the racks. (Although where I am training - in Toledo, Ohio, I have yet to wait with my trainer at any rack for more than 15 minutes)

    I really think this is a job I can stay with for a while. At least I hope it is. Thanks again, and be safe out there.
