How come everytime somebody makes fuel comparisons they use inflated numbers like 4 or 5 dollars a gallon. I haven't paid 4 dollars a gallon for diesel in years.

14 speed? Is that a typo? Did you mean 13? I only used 24.5 as an example to show that overall gearing can be achieved via various combinations to arrive at the same RPM/MPH.

Is this your shift pattern and are you using LO in high range perhaps?

I'm a little old school, thought maybe there was something new out there like a 14 speed.

A 10 direct has a first gear ratio of 14.78 vs. 12.31 for the 13 OD. A difference of 20% , this could be a problem when trying to get big loads moving.

It would be like having to start in 3 rd gear on a 10 direct, every time. You would loose functionality in the top 2 gears because they would be too fast and eliminate the bottom 2 because the rear end ratio would be too tall. An 18 speed would have enough range to compensate for the tall rears.

2.64 rear gear and 10 speed direct would work out fine for 60 mph or less
As for driving 55, we all know that if you drive 55 and miss a load appointment, you loose tones of money. I generally drive as slow as i can while still managing my 11 hour clock. For most loads I drive around 60 or 62. If I drive 55 all the time i would miss delivery appointments and loose a load every week.
if making your truck as green as possible is your goal, who cares about loosing tons of money, right?
do the changes you want and then drive 55 and you'll be very happy making your truck greener. ;)

Ruthless Thanks this.
