Fifth direct, third over ... what are they talking about with these gears? I am having a bit of difficulty locating a definition/explanation elsewhere so I figured it was time to turn to my favorite forums for some help. Sorry being noobish about this.

On a 13 or 18 speed, direct and over, mean Direct and Overdrive positions in the auxiliary portion of the transmission as selected at the gear shift with the splitter button. These days they are usually referred to as L & H ie. Low and High in the past the shifter knob was labeled Dir. & O/D.
-
On a 10 speed Overdrive, top gear is "over" and 9th gear would be direct.
As in direct drive. Meaning the gear reduction is 1:1. So that the output shaft of the transmission is equal to the input shaft speed, ie the engine speed.
In Overdrive, the output shaft is turning faster than the engine. -

Actually season 6, when Austin helps with the 100 tonne push to Prudoe Bay.
-
But as for direct and over they refer to 13 and 18spds. 3 over would be...uh...8th if I'm not mistaken that's counting low as 1st and 2nd gear. I don't use low unless I have too and it all gets pretty confusing I have respect for anybody that can actually count them off. And put numbers of the actual gears where they belong. -
I was thinking Season 4 when Lisa gets her first chance at push trucking with Jack and Carey. Season 4 was the last good season.
-
After watching IRT I'm almost embarrassed to admit I used to haul over the Dalton.
-
Lessons learned so far from watching IRT season 6:
- Just because you have your CDL doesn't mean you're the best (Austin, Darrel, and Porkchop)
- No amount of driving time makes you better than other drivers (Darrel)
- No amount of time with a company makes you better than other company drivers (*coughJackJesseecough*)
- Quit whining, no one want to hear it (Austin)
- A good attitude and a willingness to learn can take you a long way in the trucking industry.
