You made a good point . Training for other careers is sometimes just as wasteful . But consider this . CDL mills and starter companies don't want a student to succeed . If 90% of graduates stayed in the industry a year CDL mills would go broke because no new drivers would be needed and starter companies would see a huge drop in profit from the loss of cheap trainees .

I don't think that most who get a free ride (WIA) will care or try 1/2 as much as someone that has to scratch the $$ together to do it for themselves...

    I call it personal responsibility..

I definitely agree on the predatory schools that are CDL Mills. There seems to be little oversight there. I checked one out once near Madison that had absolute junk for equipment and didn't seem to care about training as much as getting someone to sign up. I talked to a couple of graduates that said stay far away, they teach very little and just want your money. Also I've read here about the bottom barrel companies, England and CRST come to the forefront of being the worst. Some places talk about the costs of bringing new hires on yet do little to retain people and from their actions don't want people to succeed which is wrong. A big problem with trucking is lack of training and support. If these companies are getting subsidized for training and employing new people they should be checked out to see what their training program is like and how they try to retain drivers. I'll agree with some of these people who can't hold a job or have attendance problems in previous jobs as most likely being a waste of taxpayer dollars for training. And yes there are people out there that are professional students living off the back of taxpayers so they never have to work. I've seen a few of those too. They should be weeded out and banned from subsidies/grants as well. I'll agree from what I've read here the industry does need some serious reform.

DHntr I agree with that as well for the most part. That's why IMO the amount of subsidies one should get should be limited. I was typing my post up while you posted yours. I agree with the personal responsibility Drac1985 had a great and very entertaining post detailing that very thing.

I wouldn't mind the government funding training if it was limited to apprentice programs with carriers with less than 40% turnover . Paying training for trainees going to carriers with over 100% turnover is insane .
I worked for a contractor building a highway in NW AR . The contract required hiring and training a certain number of minorities . No minorities were even applying for jobs . The government claims they help disabled people get jobs by subsidizing employers to hire them . These people do some jobs as well as others but get paid less so the employer can get money from the government .

I was told in advanced that due to funding issues that WIA will not apply because the government will only allow 1,000 for funding and schools range from 2,800 to 6,000

    In response to Message #43:
@Goldenfan: I think I know the school...lol They wanted a letter of absolute intent to hire before they'd let ME pay for the tuition. After some research, I have discovered they reap the fed money(non WIA)and most likely would scavenge my WIA money as well to pad THEIR placement numbers...lol If I found my own job, and my own funding, why should THEY get the credit? So they get money too. They don't care about safety, skills, or even ethics. It's been confirmed, they're a classic CDL mill...profit only!
In Wisconsin, WIA offers on the job training incentives as well for the employer, up to eight weeks after school. If the new employer has less than 50 employees, the program pays the employer 90% of my wage. Otherwise its 50% And all new funding is set for Wisconsin's new fiscal year, July 1.
I have a business plan, and a financial forecast for O/O, so these funds are going to be put to very good use. My forecast is based on 1,5,10, and 15 years.
To preempt any questions regarding my involvement in the WIA program, I am a former business owner, and some very unfortunate things have happened to my family health wise, and that is why I am eligible for the funding. I'm a full time single dad, and this "hand-up" is so greatly appreciated by my loved ones.

Update, on 06-25-2013, I had to take a TABE (Test Adult Education) at the TWC (Texas Workforce Commission). I passed the test and then they asked for the school information I wanted to attend and the dates of when the next classes start. I am now waiting for the next instructions.

As for all the naysayers, pay NO attention to them if you are a real gogetter who is in need of a way to get training for a truck driving job, go for it! It only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch. The problem with naysayer's is they always focus on the few bad apples and not acknowledge the good and responsible users of the WIA programs that go on to be successful and productive truck drivers that pay more than their share back into the system. Most are tuff individuals like myself who are honest and hard working and stick out the job for years. I spent 25 years in one spot, one job, same employer, same position, starting at the bottom and working to the top. To get there was tuff and my hat is off to anyone who has done the same as I. If no one stuck out being a truck driver, the naysayers would not exist to be a naysayer in the first place. The naysayers can't and will not accept the true to life fact that there will always be better, more successful, higher educated, skillful, younger and some older people that will be as much or better than they are at truck driving. The naysayers have got to get use to thr fact that sooner or later they are going to be replaced by someone just as good or better than they are. Everyone bad-mouthing WIA, schools or newbies! GET REAL, UNDERSTAND REAL LIFE! THER WILL ALWAYS BE THE GOOD AND BAD IN EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE INCLUDING YOU AND I! THERE IS NOT ONE SINGLE ANYONE OR ANYTHING PERFECT IN THE REAL WORLD! GET OVER IT, GET REAL, GET ON WITH LIFE! If you can't stop looking or moving back in life and can't stop bad-mouthing, GET OFF MY POST AND STAY OFF! My post on this forum is for those who are HONESTLY LOOKING FOR A WAY TO START TRUCKING! GOT IT NAYSAYERS AND MISUSERS OF WIA PROGRAMS! If you are someone who is honestly looking for a way to get a CDL Trucking license and job, my post is for you! If you are just a NAYSAYER or just playing around and not serious about trucking, MY POST ON THIS FOURM IS NOT FOR YOU, GET OFF AND STAY OFF!

Thanks mdkarle for the info...please keep us all updated as to what the next steps are in your process...best of luck to you.

On a side note - my husband attended a local truck driving academy in the late 90's funded by WIA funds, because he had been unexpectedly laid off from his job. He is now going on 18 years of professional OTR driving. It was a blessing for him and for our family.
