I was pre-approved yesterday with Landstar. Im waiting for my plates to come in so I can go to orientation Monday. Do You fellow BCO's got room for a new BCO?
fortycalglock Thanks this. -
Actually, I do have a question. I called on a Landstar posting this am and the first question the agent asked was whether I was an approved carrier or a BCO.....
Not the first time it's happened.
Usually, they don't ask that, but I'm thinking it's my demeanor, I mean, usually I'm only calling on loads I'm really interested in, and so my demeanor is markedly different than when I'm only calling out of curiosity...
So...this has me wondering, are there two gross rates??
Why ask me if I'm a Carrier or a BCO?
Adam, any thoughts? -
No. A lot of times loads post to both a broker board and the landstar board. Some agents will only load bco's. They wont tell you the rate until they know if your an approved carrier or not. The LS rate is usually more than the approved carrier rate...So yes there are 2 rates......I called on a load agent tells me about load and quotes a rate of $600 on 1OO something miles. I tell him Im a bco and I get the $800 that was posted on LS board....
-
Thanks, I will take that into consideration when I'm prying up on my lever......

Make sure you get the Scareface sandwich during lunch when at the Reno orientation. Lisa is really cool and full of useful information.

Always room for another. Welcome to the family.
The BCO's get the full rate and Landstar pays them a percentage of it. They also pay the agent a percentage of the linehaul for handling the freight. When a broker calls in on a brokerable load, the rate you're getting is the starting point the agent wants to start the load at. Could be the max they'll pay, which is what we do in some cases... Could be the starting point for negotiation.trees Thanks this. -
that's a yes and no sorta question, as I was a BCO for a while I would see a rate on the load board for sayyyyyyy $2.40, in turn my rate to the truck might be roughly 1.70 after the 35% comes off. A buddy of mine I know here in LV is a approved carrier with LS meaning he has a few trucks but carries his own authority and all that and is not a owner op directly under LS. He is his own trucking company. He calls the agent that is posting the same load and the agent is offering him somewhere around 1.70 a mile for that load. He and I compared rates a few times and it seemed about the same, he was up a few times and then I was up a few times from what I saw on the loadboard on my end compared to his offers from the agents.
Now a funny note though is I see some freight that he never saw but also he got some decent loads that I never saw on the load board so go figure??? He dealt with the secondary broker board while I was on the direct LS board.
So I would see it as simple math when a agent asks if you are a BCO or a carrier is the rate they will quote because they will more or less give a cut rate or LS BCO rate give or take the 35%, at the end of the day its a slippery business.
If I am way out of the ballpark feel free to correct??? -
Hey yall, just wondering how it is to work for Landstar? Had a friend of mine go over there back in the late 90's and he liked it. I'm missing the open road and a truck that goes over 65. Lost contact with my friend so thought I'd ask here. I was an owner operator for NAVL back in 1998-1999. Are you guys pretty happy there?
