Are we required to log a pre trip inspection even though we are not required to fill out a VIR for it? I know you are supposed to fill out the VIR when you do your post trip inspection and log it, but what about the pre trip?

I got a violation in Washington for not being current to my last change of duty. Problem is that I was current. I had made my horizontal line to where I went from off duty to driving on the off duty line. I use an app on my iPhone for my logs so it doesn't draw the vertical line. The officer told me that I then have to start a line on driving to show that I started driving. Is this true? I can't find anything in the FMCSA rules and regs that this is true! I was told and have read that we don't even have to use the vertical lines at all. It just makes it easier for the DOT to look at your logs and have all the lines connected but its not required. I want to do a DATA Q on it but want to get as much info as I can. Thanks.

No. On the 8th day, the hours you used on the 1st day roll over, and are added back into your available hours. It's a sliding 7-day sum. However, if a driver uses all available hours before the 8th day (gets marooned with no freight, etc,) he or she can choose to do a 34-hour restart and have a fresh 11/14/70 once that's done.

I'm OTR... not local, but I believe as long as you keep it under 100 miles, you just have to keep track of your hours on your time card, don't ya? It's only if you run outside of that local area that you must log your hours like we do.

    Question 13:
Are drivers required to draw continuous lines between the off-duty, sleeper berth, driving, and on-duty (not driving) lines on a record of duty status when changing their duty status?

Guidance: No. Under §395.8(h) the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) require that continuous lines be drawn between the appropriate time markers within each duty status line, but they do not require that continuous lines be drawn between the appropriate duty status lines when drivers change their duty status.

Using the 100 mile? you have to start and return to the same spot where you pick up the truck AND work no more than 12 hours.

You don't need to take any ten hour break, in fact, and you don't need any 34 hour reset, or any lunch break for sure, and you don't need to make any money driving, after all, if it were not for those three things, the companies could make a lot more money, all you actually need is a meal about every other day that you could eat while driving, you need water, and a steady supply of amphetimines. The company is good enough to let you drive the nice shiney trucks, and you have a bunk to crash in every few days to keep you from having a heart attack.

You start your new 70 when your schedule requires it if hours are available . If you have less than 70 hours in the last 7 days you may not require a restart .
