For those of you who have read my many threads and for those who haven't I recently (6/25/13) graduated from truck driving school with a 184-hour certificate. I passed all my endorsement tests for doubles/triples, tank & hazmat. I have put applications to a couple ltl companies. Here's my dilemna. Armellini Express Lines!!! I have heard and read nothing but good things about them such as they are a good company and they pay well. They are close which is good for me. However they are otr and only run teams otr. Both of which I am not entirely keen on. However if the pay is good it may be my only option. Armellini is hiring a couple new drivers who have just graduated out of school and plan on doing orientation around the third week in july, which puts me just under my 30 day mark of when I graduated from school. So I talked to a recruiter yesterday and I must have asked her at least a dozen questions, one of which is how much can I expect to make starting out if I get offered a position. She said that orientation is like 5 days at $10 an hour and once I start training I will be considered 4th seat with a team and my pay will be 12 cents a mile. 4th seat may only last a couple weeks or less depending on my progression and then I go to 3rd seat while still in training and my pay goes up to 13 cents a mile @ 3rd seat. Now I told her that my current job pays me $500 a week bring home and I really can't stand to go below that and be able to pay my bills and she said of course nothing is guaranteed but that she hasn't seen anything less than $500-$515 a week for new people. But she mentioned on a northeast run you do like 2800 miles which if my math is correct comes out to $336. She also mentioned you get paid for all the stops you do which could be a dozen and how many "cubes" are loaded. And of course I know I get paid even if I'm not driving because its as long as the truck is moving. She was nice and all but I am not convinced I will not see a $500 paycheck starting out. I am anxious to start a new career in driving truck and if I knew I would bring home at least $500 I wouldn't be writing this thread. I went ahead and filled out an application after talking to her last night because I am interested in the position and don't want to pass it up. Anyone with knowledge of Armellini or good knowledge that can tell me if I go with them will I likely be looking at less than $500 bring home in the beginning or is $500 bring home a week likely?

If you are going to go otr there's no way I would go for that kind of pay that is highway robbery there are a ton of other companies that will pay much much better than that heck even Werner and swift pay better than that and I think they are the crapiest companies out there (that's my option of them) one company to maybe think about would be Conway truckload they pay decent otr and they have an option after a year to move to ltl (Conway freight) and keep you seniority

Driver some helpful advise she's a recruiter. Recuriter's don't always tell the truth actually they rarely tell the truth. Now You know what you need to keep a roof over your head and food on the table. Do your own math on miles pay etc. and don't believe what she's telling you. I would call her back and see if you can get the phone numbers of a few other drivers that are in training ask what they're taking home and how much they're making. If it isn't going to work for you stop and find somebody else. There are many LTL companies out there however most that I have seen will not hire you without experience. You may be able to find another company that will let you on with very little experience or no experience to get you moving. You may need to take a regional position to get you some experience and then move to LTL in the future however I will say this once you get into LTL if you like it stay there. A lot of guys kill for LTL positions they're good paying and it's easy work if you're running line haul doing drop and hook. Working the dock and peddling freight as a city driver is hard work. My dad did it for years. Conditions aren't the greatest however there are some good companies like SAIA that pay you a darn good wage for that position about $20/hour. Long shifts are common 10-12 if not 14 but it's what has to be done and think about the overtime paychecks.
I do know back when my dad ran line haul for SAIA he ran 536 miles/night his checks came in at 950/week every week. Working nights was hell on his body and when he lost that job somebody was watching over him because it was going to get him killed eventually. He still beats himself up over it but it was for the best. LTL isn't for everybody personally it's not my thing I'd rather be regional or OTR I go stir crazy sitting at home for to long but hey that's me. Good luck in your decision whatever you have to do. Check into all options check craigslist, Indeed, etc. There are many good sites out there to look for LTL positions if that's what you would like to do. Some have long training others don't experience is what is going to hurt you the most and getting your foot in the door. Don't be afraid to go into a regional position either with a smaller company that isn't a huge mega carrier. Some of them will actually get you home fairly often. I know there is a company around here, they're OTR however it's out and back trips home 2-4 times a week. That would be a good position good miles, and decent home time.
I will say this as well. Training periods always put a strain on your bank account. You don't make much during any training period because you are training. IF you can make it through your training period with this company and scrape by look into the future at what you can make with them. Look at the short term and the long term potential before making a decision. Analyze the whole situation and look at the big picture. Things always get tight at times in trucking it happens. Believe me you are not the first person with this problem by any means others have made it you can make it too but you have to make the decision that is best for you. Good luck with this driver I hope I've given you a little help throughout most of my rambling.gearjammer1978 Thanks this. -
Conway was one company I did apply for and also southeastern which had a driver trainee position that I applied for.

Team drivers doing only 2800 miles a week? Unless that cube pay is spectacular, I'd give those ppl a pass. The team drivers at my hubbies company average about 6000 miles a week, depending on how many drop and hooks verses live load/ unloads they have.
I don't know that company, don't recall seeing their trucks. But I've talked to swift drivers that get better pay and more miles than that.
Personally I'd find another company. Do the math what do YOU need to make, per mile and how many average, to bring home what you need.
my husband averages out 2,800 - 3,200 miles per week their are better and worse weeks. To make $500 bring home, depending on taxes, you'd have to make at least .28 cpm at 2800 miles a week. I know newbies start a wee bit low but that wow.
Edit: Is is LTL that different? I missed that on my first read through.gearjammer1978 Thanks this. -
I've come to terms that starting out with no experience and living in south florida my options are severly limitied and thats why I'm reluctant to pass up this position. Also I know in the long term I could probably make more then $500 a week with them. Even the recruiter said being a flower hauler holidays, especially mothers & fathers day are huge where I can expect double my usual pay. It's just that darn hump of starting out and knowing that it'll be tough. But I always look at the glass half full. If I get on with armellini and I start out with my paycheck under $500 a week (god I hope not) I know my last check with my current employer will be rather huge as they will be paying me my unused sick time and vacation pay. Plus I will change my deductions to 9 (hehe) to get that extra cash. And I can cash out my retirement thru them as a last case resort which should be at least $5,000-$7,000. I guess its good to have a plan. But of course all the while I will be busting but to get myself thru training and get that 2nd seat position!!!!!!379exhd Thanks this.

I may have misspoke. She said 2800 miles a trip but I could do 2 of those a week. They are to the northeast and back. They also have a california terminal which I'm sure would bring at least $500 a week and the recruiter said I go where the trainer's go so it could be the northeast or it could be out west.

Well that would be better. Yeah S FL is a sink for finding a driveing job, well a good one anyway. Though I know I've seen some.
Have you looked into Fl Rock? Or some of the sugar/produce haulers? Hmm I just didn't pay as much attention when we went down to S FL to deliver as I should have I guess. I know I saw some rock haulers. -
Florida Rock & Tank wants at least a year experience. I checked them out already. That's another reason why I'm reluctant to pass up armellini is because if I don't like it there but can stick it out for a year or two I will have my experience and so many doors will open up.
