You must be talking about Hourly Pay, Mileage Pay pays when the wheel are turning. Most any other duties are just considered part of the job, (I have never been paid just to sweep out a trailer). But that Time would still count on my 70. Some warehouses want me to "Count" the freight for Free, time would still count on my 70.
If All these Do-Gooders want to reduce Tired Drivers, then they should ADDRESS the Shippers and Consignees that want Driver's Free Work.

The " Do-Gooders " Group called 'Public Citizen' are so concerned about our HOS, keeping the driver in the middle between FMSA/DOT and Carriers, Shippers and Receivers that the Driver ends up with a "Fixed Income".
I wish they {Public Citizen} would get their CDL and work UnderCover for 7 weeks. But of Course, Their 'Tunnel Vision' would Only see the 'Support of their Cause'. -
I was refering to your comment regarding readiness. If you need to be ready to respond to an on duty situation in any way then you cannot log your time as off duty time. I understand it is a fine line but in tha case of a ferry crossing you qould likely be flagged if you recorded the time as off duty.
Same in your home terminal. Your boss says your load is not ready, log off until it is. You cannot log this time as off duty because you are "in readiness" waiting for your load. If they were to say you can log off for an hour or log off till 10 O'clock, meaning you can log off leave, and come back you could then log that time as off duty. -

Why can't they have you log your 30 minute break on the ferry but still pay you the same? Nothing wrong with a paid break. Smokers at office jobs get them all the time.
