Hi ... been OTR for 30+ years, driven just about everything I think LOL.

Past 5 years my wife and I have been Expedite Fleet Owners.

Looking to diversify our business and, as well as expediting, get into the auto shipping market.

Starting out with just one medium duty truck with 3-4 car trailer.

Would prefer to contract with a company for a while (would be hiring a contractor driver)

So all the obvious newbie questions LOL .....

Which Companies take on sub contractors?

What are the usual set up requirements?

Do Companies usually have permits and base plate programs?

Thousand and one other questions LOL, really appreciate any and all advice

    Thanks

Jones Motor Company has a couple of hot shot companies. Tracer and Hot Shot Express. As far as I know they still have these two divisions. I think that Bennett Motor Express also has a hot shot division. I don't know if they have base plate programs or not. Some carriers have a base plate program and others do not. If you want to pull 3-4 cars, you might do better getting your own authority and booking your own loads.

Carriers set up their own requirements for owner operators. You can usually find their requirements on their websites or by calling their recruiting department. Some carriers have maximum age on trucks and others don't. If you put a driver in a truck that you lease to a carrier, they will need to approve them before allowing them to haul freight, whether they are a contractor or not. You will be responsible for paying your driver and taking care of any workers comp or occupational accident policy, if required. The carrier pays you and you pay everything else, including driver pay. Some carriers offer a weekly pay for permits and base plates. Others furnish them. You usually make more money if you buy your own base plates. I would suggest going with a carrier that pays percentage rather than mileage. You can usually earn more money on percentage.

Thanks G/Man. Sounds more or less on par with the expediting world. We are on percentage, carrier pays us we pay our drivers etc.

    Again our thanks to you.

Not wanting to break any rules.... but we do offer plates and insurance for our lease trucks transporting autos all paid weekly as you get paid. We have a few of what I call "investor's" leased on where they own the truck and hire the approved driver. And then I more or less run the driver and direct deposit the truck owner while he pays his driver. PM if I can answer any questions...

    Grobie Thanks this.

Grobie, I work with a few 3-4 car haulers and they are usually owner-operators. Sub hauling does not always keep them busy. So it may depends on how much / often you want to be haling, or have your truck on the road. I know one such hauler in Kansas City, he hauls for JMN and he likes being home everyday, so his hauls are always local. As for how much he brings in, I imagine it isn't much.

Just filled a 3 car hauler with a 300 mile ride. I believe it only gave him a little over 600 for the 1day trip. Whether it was worth it with gas and everything I'm not sure.
