Well here I am in hopes of garnering some sage advice. I have had my CDL-A since 1995 but have never driven a T/T. I drove large placing vehicles for Telecom work which were air brake equipped and pulled small trailers. Now I find myself unemployed and not sure where to or how to start my driving career. I just added endorsements for doubles-triples, tanker and am waiting for HME check. I am hoping to get into tankers but at 45yo not sure if anyone will give me a shot. Anything you can offer will be much appreciated. TIA, Bobby

Most carriers will not accept the experience you have as long haul or over the road experience. Many outfits with some form of training program may be interested in hiring you if you are willing to under take a refresher period with a trainer.

I would call around, a lot of companies will hire you as long you pass a road test but they just will not give you credit for your years that you have driven. This means your starting pay will be the same as someone with no experience. The good thing is you will skip the refresher course and/or OTR training period and you will go straight to driving solo and you will have a job.

Your age is irrelevant in trucking as long as you can pass a DOT physical.
Tanker is the best for annual pay.
Apply with Schneider tanker division.
Kenan does a lot around Pensacola & Mobile.
Comcar has tanker and sometimes hires new drivers. One driver just out of CDL school posted he got a tanker job with Comcar.
Florida Rock & Tank is a good one.
Prime has a tanker school, but don't know if they have any accounts near you.
Clean Harbors has terminals all over the USA.
Maverick will probably hire you for flatbed. They do hire with no experience, if you already have a CDL.
Benny Whitehead Trucking might hire you; it's a reefer outfit in Eufaula, AL running back to back West Coast/Florida turns.
Check all these companies websites, ignore any "experience required" and apply anyway.Viande Thanks this. -
Thank you all for the replies. I have been searching as suggested and all asked for experience so I skipped them. I will go back and apply regardless now. Thank Chinatown for the list, at least I have some places to start.

Call some tanker company's and ask. Some say tanker co won't hire rookie drivers. But that's not totally true. I got hired with a very good tank co right out of CDL School and love it.
Keep in mind liquid loads MOVE. Not everyone likes that feeling.
Best of luck. -
Iowa 80 truck show is this week. Anybody near Walcott Ia swing by and say hello. I have a loaner truck (cascadia) and my stainless show trailer entered. Unfortunately my Coronado show class truck was clipped Monday!!!! Nonetheless swing by and visit, be safe out there.

I have been following your posts because I start at DCCC on Monday and was wondering if there was anyone there that failed the class? I heard that they do sort of a small agility test on the 2nd day, is that true? Thanks for any info you can provide me!
