The jake for some people is like chrome for others. I think the only time they should not be used is in truck stops and real small towns. Now you say if we keep abusing them we eventually can not use them. So tell me something when they say no more jakes ever are they also gonna make a truck were something happens to help save breaks. Read the quote below this about oversize. He has to use them. So until something is made to take the place of a jake break they will not be banned and if they are then they will risk the lives of all the truckers and four wheelers on the road.
the unnecessary usage of j-brakes, why????

And the "Harley's" are still usually as loud or louder than a straight piped Jake but the law don't give them a load of #### a bullahuler would be wouldn't even want to deal with. I might have my Jake on coming through town on the highway if a highway runs through a town but I don't bring bike home at 2am and wake up everybody that lives on that street. Were talking about the noise being annoying a Jake is no louder than a Harley, and a straight piped Jake is less common than Harleys, but we take more crap.
You can keep your opinion that Harleys sound awesome il takel the sound of a 550 cat backing off down to about 800rpm over a Harley any day...can't wait till I get the 8s for my truck I still have a bone to pick with a few peoplewake me up at 3a.m. prank calling me and I'll roll by your house at 3 am and kick my Jake on...its cheaper than buying an old police cruiser and crashing the party impersonating the cops...less legal repercussions too lol.

What's wrong with jakes? I live about a mile away from the freeway & I love hearing the jakes. When you're carrying a 40k load you don't want to keep your foot on the brakes especially traveling @ 55 mph on a decline highway... that's why the jakes are there to help prevent your brakes from over heating.. and of course safety reasons.
Now If you want to talk about those annoying Honda's with the fart can mufflers I hear on the freeway everyday.... you get the idea -
What is it they say, "Loud pipes save lives"? There are extremes, to be sure. But frankly, Ivanhoe, I think you are getting your nose out of joint over something relatively minor. My company put us in a motel right beside I-80 on the downside of Mt Pocono. Yes, the jakes woke me up at times, but I learned to live with it...it means trucks are moving which means goods are being shipped because people have the money to buy stuff. I sympathize with you if you are a light sleeper, even feel sorry for you if you feel you have to move because of jake brakes. I would guess that you've never been in a truck, let alone drive one. Maybe you will have an opportunity to ride along some day. You'll certainly gain a greater appreciation for what these guys do for you day in and day out.

when I hear some jack wagon complaining about Jakes it makes me want to put straights on mine
And roll by his house at 3 am. My truck is an road
Ranger 10 spd but auto shift, the reason I bought it was price, but with a heavy load it dont down
shift as fast as I would like and the Jake helps it
Downshift quicker and helps stop faster with out over heating my breaks. -
Brakes on a truck cost roughly $400 per axle, on a normal highway truck that's 5 axles. Brakes typically need replaced about once a year around 100,000 miles just like a car and this does not count drums, slack adjusters and possibly brake chambers. Do the math. This does not even get into the safety aspect of mountainous regions where drivers need every bit of help they can get to keep that truck at a moderate safe speed without hindering traffic and keeping the brakes cool at the same time.

I must be a non typical driver, I use my jakes and have over 350,000 on my truck and have only replaced the front brakes.

Oh my, your truck is to loud....
good grief your bike is to loud...
what next?
This modern world we live in makes me sick, my old Shovelhead with straight pipes has saved my butt quite a few times, and my 2007 Electra Glide although LARGER than my rigid shovel has almost got me ran over multiple times.....why? because 4 wheelers, and 18 wheelers alike are to busy listening to headsets, or texting, yes I see it all the time. My Electra Glide is solid black/chrome and "cannot" be seen or "heard" by the general public do to my stock exhaust, and their loud music, phone conversations, texting and other foolish things people tend to do. Coming down I-81 a couple years ago on our bikes running 70mph with a white W900 not more than 20 ft behind my wife and I on our bikes, now that was a PROFESSIONAL...if only I could have looked him in the eye... I have many times slipped into town with my O'l Harley with straight pipes and not bothered no one, guess it's all in how your raised on that part....? Let the stone throwing begin379exhd Thanks this.
