Has anyone left law enforcement to become a truck driver? If so, any advice? Would you do it again? Thanks in advance. :biggrin_25520:

Yes there have been a number of former Law Enforcement to switch over to be truckers. All kinds I know one ex Sheriff Deputy (ran for the Sheriff position once) who bought his own truck and got his own authority.

I left full time law enforcement with 8 years in to get back into trucking. I was making 35k a year working 48 weekends out of a year on patrol. My college degree meant absolutely nothing as the good ole boy system was well established before I was a cop. I now make $45-50k a year running automotive freight, home every day by 3 pm, off weekends on a dedicated account. To make that money at my old job, I would need to be a captain with about 20 years experience. I know of three or four other former law enforcement that work with me. Most of all its nice that when people break the. At my company, they get punished or terminated, something that rarely happened at my old job. Its pretty terrible some of the things that go on behind the scenes in law enforcement and what they get away with.

Yep. Left law enforcement after 14 yrs. No regrets whatsoever. Politics in every job, but it's God awful in LE. Not only do you deal with public politics, but it's just as bad in your own department. Not only that but the bad guys are getting crazier and crazier and it's getting harder and harder to keep them behind bars. I needed a change.

I put in my 20 years, plus a little bit and retired. Then drove for several years until I retired (again.)

Would I do it again? Oh hell yes! In fact, if I had a chance to go back and change things, I'd have started trucking in my 20's and probably never done anything else.

That is a no brainer. If the company is asking you to run illegal, you are working for the wrong company. However there are times that crap happens. I was never concerned about it if the situation just put me a few minutes over. Traffic tie ups and other situations can combine to make you run over. But if it was a significant amount of time, I'd shut down and notify dispatch. If they didn't like it, (and they never did,) too bad.
