My point is this. Too many Trained and Certified wheel holders out on the road now.Common sense has been replaced by a test. Remember the CDL thing was going to get rid of bad drivers and make the roads safe. Yeah Sure. It did just the opposite.Loads do not just fall off and trucks do not flip over all on their own. I know I sound Bitter and I do not mean to,but this stuff never stops.Treat your load no matter if it is a single coil or 24 pallets of cheeries like they are going to fly off of the trailer and it most likely never will move. Quit driving these trucks like they are go karts or sports cars and your troubles are over. This is not rocket science. You basicly go from here to there without running into or over anything. It is not that hard to do.The old guys like me do this because we want to and wanted to since we were little boys. The (so called) drivers today are different than us is all I can say.

Strapped is not a good word here. Chained down is the word you are looking for. Steel on steel.Actually if you look at it correctly you do not chain a coil down you chain the trailer to the coil. The coil is in charge here not the Tractor or TrailerCondoCruiser Thanks this.

Good thing there is no construction on 610 right now.

Agreed, but this sort of accident can happen to anyone on any given day, given an unfortunate set of circumstances converging at a particular point at a particular time. For all we know this may have been a 25 year veteran flatbedder. I suspect not, but it's hard for me to make any assumptions about anything at this point

I've seen many a dedicated coil driver roll out with 2 fhains on a coil. Maybe 3. Sure your chains may be rated for a higher weight. But that doesn't mean it will stop a 48k coil when it decides it wants to go fo r a walk.
-
Anybody that does that is obviously trying to commit suicide. I just hope I am not around when they decide to do it.

I saw this on the news this afternoon. That coil he was hauling was about 6ft tall standing on its end. I gather they had it loaded on the center of the deck standing up. Didn't really see any chains but boy did that thing take a big bite out of the road way. I believe they loaded it wrong coupled with speed to fast for that spot. What was it about two months ago a van trailer rolled in that same spot caring rolls of paper. People need to learn to slow down and observe the road.

I don't know if the shipper loaded it "wrong" they probably loaded it the way the buyer wanted it loaded or the way the driver wanted it loaded ... which may have been wrong or may not have been wrong. When talking about [large] coils often there is not one configuration that is significantly better than other options, they all suck in terms of both securement difficulty and highway safety.

Nothing will stop that coil if it deciedes to move. The thing is to never give it the opprotunity to move.
