in order for me to attend swift, i have to acquire a cdl permit with general knowledge, combinations, air breaks, and pre-trip. when i went to the texas dps in san antonio, they told me i didn't need air breaks and pre-trip for a cdl permit (in texas they are right, i dont need air breaks and pre-trip for a cdl permit)...after i informed them that i still needed it for the school they continued to inform me i didn't and they didn't have a permit test for air breaks and pre-trip; has anyone encountered this problem with their dps in texas? and how have you gone about rectifying the situation...because i can't get dps to give me the tests, and i can't get into the school with out it

I am glad I got my license.... I know they should have all the tests. that's weird they said they don't have them, they are required to have.
-
this is for the cdl permit, and texas is a state where you only need to take the general knowledge and combinations to get a cdl permit...to get a cdl license, you would need to take those tests
its frustrating because this is the last and final thing that i need to accomplish and its keeping me from going to school
also, i feel they should inform you to study more than just the texas cdl handbook, there were questions on the general knowledge portion that could only be found in the texas commercial driver law -
I suggest calling your recruiter and asking,"Do I need the air brakes and pre-trip testing for my CDL permit?" I looked at the "What to bring" PDF file from the Swift training site and I can see why you would be concerned.
Good luck; let us know what you find out and how you're doing.Left Eye and futuretruckertx Thank this. -
You'll definitely need to do some studying. However, the people at the DPS office are incorrect in that they don't have the tests. They do. I took all of the tests to get my permit, and then did the road test a little later by itself.
All of the tests aren't required for the permit, but you can take them at any time. Maybe try going back up there and talking to a different person on a different day? It sounds like they either had incorrect knowledge or were too lazy to set up all of your tests.
Now that I think about it, it IS possible that some offices don't offer all of the tests, because not all of them offer the road test. Try to find an office that does the road test, you'll know it easily because there will be trucks around it all day.
If that particular office DOES do the road test, then I'd go back on a different day and talk to a different person, because if they do the road test then they have all of the written tests. Someone may just have incorrect knowledge or was being too lazy to set up the tests for you.Left Eye and futuretruckertx Thank this. -
i contacted my recruiter right after i left the texas dps, and he told me if i didn't have it i wouldn't be able to attend the school. he also said if i tried showing up with out it i would be turned around and sent home at my own expense.
and in addition, he also added that he has had problems with this before with texas students...which made me wonder why he didn't inform me of this in the first place, other than that the recruiter has been pretty helpful...but, being ex military i already know how recruiters are -
thank you, i studied the cdl handbook for the last couple of months and i passed all the tests i took...its just nobody told me i would have to study more than the cdl handbook, and the texas commercial driver law make the texas cdl handbook look like a brochure lol
but ill definitely head back down there again and see what i can conjure up
oh also, do you think its possible they were confused...what i mean is, is there two differen air break and pre trip tests (one for permit, one for license)...because when i was inquiring about it i said i needed general knowledge, combinations, air break, and pre trip permit tests...im wondering if maybe there is only one test for the air break and one for the pre tripLast edited: Jul 17, 2013
Rick_C Thanks this. -
I'll bet they were confusing the permit tests with the endorsement tests.
Find a facility that does the actual testing, you'll have better luck.

im actually confused now, i think im going to contact my recruiter again on the matter...people are telling me there are 5 tests, but the recruiter only named 4 (general, air breaks, pre trip, and combinations)...now that i think about it the first test may have not been the actual general knowledge test because it was called something like texas commercial driver knowledge..
this dps location does do the actual testing -
There are 4 total written tests for a Class A CDL in Texas.
General Knowledge
Air Brakes
Combination Vehicles
Pre-Trip Inspection
The 5th test is technically the road test where you're doing the actual driving.
I should mention that this is the way it was when I took the tests back in December of 2011. Since Texas loves to change things every five minutes, I would call the main DPS office in Austin and ask for detailed clarification.
I think where the confusion lies is in the Pre-Trip and Air Brakes tests. There are no tests for these sections for a permit, only for the license. I'm not sure if they'll let you do all of them if you're only going for a permit, you might have to be going for the entire license and planning to take the road test. I would definitely call and ask.
On a side note, if you're curious about the actual driving test, here's the form they use when grading you:
