All I can tell you guys is this...........If your looking for adventure, obstacles, and challenges well trucking is the way too go.
It was a hell of a 1st run. I made it home safe no accidents no violations/tickets.. I gained alot of knowledge on this trip learned
allot, there is so much to learn..Im getting the hang of tarpping and un tarping, its not that bad as i thought it was at first, i still need to get the smaller sizes.
Slowly im getting the hang of it, and driving as well, my body isnt use to it, slowly but surely. I have to except the fact that in trucking when you go pick up a load , it wont be your turn for another 4 freaking hours :/
AND when you go for drop off and wait 3 hrs for you to get unloaded they come to and and say "Oh sorry driver they sent you to the wrong branch, Its about 5 miles down from here" <<<< SOB...5 miles in Philly is like 2 hrs man. I didnt like the east coast much its to congested, and their rude, I looks out perfer west coast, but when your Owner Operator you go where the money is, am i rite? So im not going to be picky about it.....Im going to now enjoy my day off, have some Coronas on my patio and jup in my pool...I get a call fro my dispatcher, hes a real good guy very hard worker i pay him pay 10% of each load of my and its worth every cent. He just called said listen Johnny i know your off but i just wanted to let you know there is a load from Chicago to N.C pays great you can pick it up today if you want i can set it up for deliver Mon-Tues, you can leave Sunday..... :) Stuff like that real good guy, I enjoy working with him. So Ill be leaving Monday and enjoy my 4 days off..
You guys be safe out there and one ore thing.....KEEP ON TRUCKING!

    Thank's

    Jonny

Is this (paying off a dispatcher for "better loads") typical in the industry?

No, what the op is doing is paying an independent dispatcher to dispatch him. He runs under his dads authority, so they are not involved with another company.

Rick listen too Oscar he knows what he's talking about.
Having a dispatcher is beneficial for me. Its worth it, and no its not just a phone call, he busts his ### off.
He hunts for good loads because 10% for him each load, not 50 bucks fpr each load where he will just don't give a rats ###
