I am looking to get my cdl and go out to one of these oilfields. I have no trucking experience but I hear that I would be able to get a job fairly easily in either oilfield. My goal is to make(and save up) as much money as possible. I want to work up to getting a good hourly rate but I also want to work A LOT of overtime. I would be out there to work so I'm more interested in how much I can make a year than I make an hour. I understand that the living costs(rent, food, etc.) are lower in TX compared to ND. Which oilfield would I be better off in?

Both oillfields are slowing down and the rates are dropping REAL fast. I would look for another line of work. Just my $.02.
-
North Dakota isn't slowing down, it's just getting more competitive. Get on with the right company and you'll have plenty of work. Sign on with some fly-by-night outfit and you'll be sitting.
jvar4001 Thanks this. -
Some companies are looking for a lot of drivers. The price of gas is jumping fast. When the price at the pump goes up, production can't be far behind. Everybody wants that money.
-
Not sure where "both oilfields" are that you mention that are slowing down. But the other ones outside of those two are crazy busy. Companies in west Texas are so desperate for drivers now, that they are guaranteeing 10hrs a day minimum.
-
Konnan, they are guaranteeing 10 hrs a day for how many days a week? 7 days? I'm looking to work a lot of hours
-
Maybe if they get desperate enough they will raise wages. Go back to paying by the hour.
-
They are desperate to bring in as many drivers as possible so they can drop the rates. Same as the OTR game. If you have 40 drivers show up for 10 openings you can pay peanuts and some sorry/desperate drivers will take the job.
tumbleweed1954 and TLeaHeart Thank this. -
Natural Gas also affects oil production, and Natural gas prices are in the tank.... which slows oil production down.
The boom cycle is reaching the plateau again, as wide eyed noobies enter the field, and drive the rates and wages down, down, down. Oil goes in 7 year cycles, and we are now in year 4 in my area.
And just because the news media states that 4000 leases were sold for drilling, less than half of those will be drilled, and even less will actually turn into a profitable well. -
Please now, it's like some people don't understand simple supply and demand. If you are offended that anyone wants to pay as little as possible for a service, what we call a 'rational consumer', then you have a sense of entitlement. If you are like me, when you go to the store, you're looking to pay as little as possible for the milk, peanut butter and underwear on your shopping list. It works both ways.
This person doesn't have a CDL yet. The fact remains, if he can find employment in oilfield trucking, he can easily make money hardly anyplace else in the country is paying.Ben Gunn and Rodeorowdy Thank this.
