Ok here is the deal. I need some real help. The situation is that I was contacted by the Army about entering the Reserves as an 88M (Motor Transport Operator), the only catch is that I am in the middle of CDL training. They want me to finish getting my CDL then got to 17 weeks of Basic and AIT. If I do this will I have to take a refresher course to apply to Prime, Pride, or Schneider? Will that hurt my chances of getting on with any of these companies? Has anyone had similar situations arise? Also, how do trucking companies hand reserve drill periods?

The main reason I considering this is because they offered a $15,000 signing bonus and $10,000 towards schooling. I know it will only be like $7,500 after taxes but it would be a great buffer before heading out on the road. Please be helpful, any assistance will be of great service.

I would talk to a Schneider recruiter about this. They have a refresher course and will probably work with you. I wouldn't turn down the military offer because that could turn into a lifetime pension and lifetime Tricare healthcare benefits for you and the family. This way, when you're old and gray, you can have 3 pensions; military, social security, trucking. Plus 2 healthcare plans for life; Medicare & Tricare.

I would look at going active army. I was in support units and its alot easier on the mind and body then the combat mos. If you get deployed it is what it is and just remember a cook can be a great friend to have in the military.

In the army you will make more money , be around your family more, and its safer lol even with deployments. Go active or not at all if your gonna be a trucker. Thats my opinion.

Your going in Milatary as a truck driver. I really doubt, after a 4-6 term driving in the milatary, you would be reqired to go to a refresher course. Besides most trucking compaines, go out of their way to hire milatary guys.

They won't take me active duty as I am prior service (Navy). They want more reserves and MAYBE, I can transition to active duty. I am looking at all my options. Thanks for the help!

My son got his CDL in the SeaBees as an EO (Equipment Operator). Drove trucks in there quite a bit.

OTR carriers go out of their way to SHAFT veterans. Vets have the same year indentured servitude as everyone else. Vets should have no problem finding smaller carriers that recognize their military driving experience.
Refresher courses are a huge ripoff.
All employers are required by law to allow reservists to meet requirements for drills and training.

It was always a pain to get home on time for drill. I know it's not legal to do so but trust me otr just doesn't work well with drill dates.

My hubs was Navy got out then joined the Army. Personally I'd say take what the Army is offering you as long as it's written down when you sign. Either way more money in your pocket, depending on the time from ETS of the Navy to entering the Army you'll keep your rank if not earn another stripe depending one what you can talk out of them. Plus in the reserves you can pay your deductible for Tricare to use on top of whatever insurance you will get from whatever carrier you go with; which is a plus depending on health conditions you or the family may have.

More time with the family in the Army? hahaha With hubs being out OTR now I truly feel like we have never left the Army. We see him here & there in person but more via factime then anything else.

If you have the opportunity go active duty.
I was in 6 years, wish i'd stayed.
You can also join reserves after active duty.
    Good luck!

ps... whatever, reserves or active , make sure your job is written in your contract.
Any recruiters word is worth only what you have in writing whether military or trucking recruiters....
