Reefer you're right about the closeouts. When I was with a friend hunting a new Volvo 780, the salesman started on me to buy one to. He had a closeout 2012 fedex spec 780 for
$125k inc FET, and that was just the number he threw out when I was walking around the unit. I could have gotten it under 120k I'm pretty sure, but I'm not ready to give up my pre-emission motor yet.

This is the info I have been curious about. Would imagine the $10k mark up is on the year or so old units selling for a retail in the neighborhood of $100k. I realize there is not one set percent mark up in anything, but would $1,000 per $10,000 of gross retail be the approximate average? Know there are a million variables, but have only bought one truck & want to learn for future reference.

PAC-CAR engines are still boat anchors just go to any shop they'll tell ya the samething.... As far as the Prostar I had it from 20? Miles up to 418,000 only "major" issue was EGR cooler now the dosier valve would clog like every 6 months or so but it was all covered under warranty but dosier valve is a simple fix 2- 8mm bolts and pull it out clean carbon off of it and reinstall take ya bout 30-45 min dealer 4-5 hrs

The new trucks that I have spoken to dealers about (just in general) that had their price shown included FET. But would not hurt to specifically ask right up front before wasting time on anything else.

As far as Paccar motors, was told or read the entire emission system was the same as Cummins? Know the first year MX motors had issues, but curious if the problems are with the actual motor, electronics/programming or the EPA mandated emission garbage?

As far as I know it's a lil of all of it but mostly EPA crap which is causing turbo issues and electrical

Our Euro friends have had these engines for years and have nothing good to say about them.

To the OP where are you located ( helps if possible ) to suggest dealers in your area.

As for T660's have bought 9 new ones in the past 3 years and with 8 never had a problem , 9TH hates to leave the KW garage. This year KW could not get their act together on a build date for 3 T680's and I needed 3 more tractors so went to FREIGHTLINER and bought 3 CASCADIAS off the lot and so far no problems.

The Paccar engines were tough in 2011 with sensor issues, no major turbo, injector or other issues. 10K is in a new unit not a left over unit, when you factor in the salesman's cut, taxes, and shop fees the dealers really don't make money on sales. They make money on parts, shop and body shop. The Paccar engine is far from a boat anchor, pay attention I'm willing to bet it becomes one of the most reliable engines that an OEM offers. The VED, Maxforce, are junk the DD series is a great engine with the emissions as is the cummins. You can drive a Kenworth for 20 years and it will look as good as the day you drove it off the lot. Do your homework on quality. The T-680's sold out on the build line quick and I understand that frustration, but wow what an incredible machine. Best of luck. :biggrin_2558:

If a dealer wants to move they will almost always throw it all out there. Just always be able to know what your looking at and be able to walk away. Make them work for it, kinda like playing hard to get! :biggrin_25523:
