Hello everybody, my name is Trey, people call me Big Trey (6'4.5", 335lbs). I turn 21 on feb 8th of this year. I grew up around trucks, my dad has been with the same sand and gravel company here in WA for 26 years. When I was 3 I first started riding with him in a old IH Transtar with a Detroit 8V71, sometimes I can still hear that truck in my sleep. For the past few years since I left highschool I've been doing under the table work for a farmer and a tree trimmer, mostly labor and driving a 68 IH Loadstar 1600 hauling hay and firewood. I don't currently work. I'm trying to get on with Watkins & Shepard's 4 week CDL training course in Missoula. It is the only school I have found so far that'll let me pay off the school money down the road, and not up front. I'm a little weary of my credit, my credit score is 575 according to freecreditreport.com. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, there is no way I can come up with $4000 to pay for a school up front. Trucking is what I have wanted to do since I was a little kid. I really enjoy pulling large trailers with my pickup, and I drive my dad's T800 around the yard as often as he'll let me.

Anyhow, just wanted to introduce myself, if anybody has any advice for me on how to get into the business without having to fork out $4000 up front I'm all ears.

P.S. I renew my license on the 8th and I was thinking about getting my CDL permit then too. What is involved in the CDL permit knowledge test? The one I found online is only 20 questions and very easy, but I was under the impression that the real one was much longer.

hello trey... iam shawn and i am working on geting in to trucking my self
and i am in the same boat myself that you stated by not being able to pay out 4000 for a CDL school.. what i did was aply for a grant ..and i did get one..one thing to know is it does take some time and a lot of info you need to gather up..like what school is good and what school is not..
there are a ton of schools out there and you can be taken in by them..
meaning they can rip ya off.. get info on what your state requires for CDL training..

next , the CDL permit as i found out i went to the dmv and ask to take it
    i was told i needed to get a dot phys..that i didnt know..lol hope i was a little help to you..:biggrin_25517:

Hey 460, I just finished W/S 30 day school, it was a great experience. As far as your credit score goes, mine was worse than yours, the important thing is your work history, they have the ability to co-sign your loan if they think you are worth the risk. Have you talked to the recuiters yet?

I talked to the recruiter, I'm actually mailing the paperwork back to them tomorrow. I only have 2 work histories to put down and both are under the table. We'll see what they say.

    460,

I think that the work history might be a problem as they look at the last 10 years of work history and want to be able to contact former employers. They are looking for good references from employers and job stability. As far a credit, I have seen them get tougher about co-signing. I wish you the best and let us know how it turns out.

Hi guys. I'm doing the same research. There are quite a few companys on the map that will pay for your training in exchange for a contract work agreement. Which of these options are available to you is limited demographically to the area of the country in which you live or are willing to live. Start at that point and work backwards. That's what I'm doing anyway. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a decent list of all of them so I'm still looking. Be warned however, some of the pay for training options I've seen are nothing short of insane, financially speaking. As an example, one company I saw will train you from complete noob to graduated CDL-A driver but the agreement is actually a loan for the training costs at **18%** interest!! On top of that, there's a 2 year labor contract. I won't say exactly what I think as I'm certain doing so would violate the "terms of use" of this forum. lol! What I will say is 18% is practically a pawn shop interest rates and would be a bad deal even if it didn't require a 2 year contract labor agreement.

I think Einstein was wrong; the most powerful force in the universe isn't compounding interest, it's the sheer depth of a mans greed. lol!

    Be careful and GOOD luck.

Hey 460 I am Hunter aka Kinghunter. I have good credit but for me I have had 7 jobs and right now am attending college. Have you thought of hiring on with your dad and asking him to see if his company would pay for CDL school? Well, take care and if have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

My dad's company won't let me drive the trucks, I'm actually not even allowed to ride in them anymore due to insurance. I get to drive them around the yard on sundays when my dad's boss isn't there. I was moving them around the yard when I was 13 or so. His boss is comparable to Scrooge.

If Watkins & Shepard doesn't accept me I might be able to borrow the money from my grandpa, but he's 84 and it'll be kind of hard for me to ask, but I'm sure he'd be happy to help me out. He was a teamster for 40 years. My only worry is if something happens and the school doesn't work out and I can't pay him back in a timely manner.

More driving jobs will open up to me after this week when I'm 21, alot of tow truck jobs and delivery truck jobs require you to be 21 years old for insurance purposes. That'll get me a good reference, experience, and I'll be able to save up the 4 grand for trucking school.

Does anybody know where I would start to look for a government grant?
