I live in an area with limited choices when it comes to OTR companies. I plan to go back to OTR driving and have done extensive research on the companies who will hire in my area with my less than a year experience. Many may choose to tell me they wouldn't choose either company I list, but like I said, this is what I am left with for my area. What I would like is constructive input on these companies and who you would choose if these were your only choices. I would also like reasons why you would or would not choose the company.

I have read all the posts on this site about these companies but feel like I would like to have Paul Harvey's take on most. The unfortunate thing here is there seems to be a lot of complaining but the question I ask is, "What is the rest of the story?" At my former company I heard lots of complaints but then when a little research was done, it was found that the complaining driver had some fault in the situation.

I say that to say, I am not looking just for complainers. Obviously there must be good as well as the bad with these companies as I have heard of drivers who have driven for them for years.

So please, help me with your inputs on my two choices which are US Xpress or Werner. Thanks.

The 2 you listed I would chose US Xpress
Why? when I was there i did get miles (just didn't get paid for the small things like layover ext.. but if you read the companies dac above then you would of read my post)

All in all it was an okay company at the time I was there...

Just remember they will bring you there for orentation and not think twice at sending you home, at your cost.. many reasons they will let you go in orentation and trust me on this, what they tell you on the phone (as in your good to go far as passing all of the qualifications for the company) is totally different in orentation...

Again you can get decent miles if you stay on top of them about it..
(and i do mean constantly, I mean call them before you deliver every load letting them know your going to need another load)

Just make sure you have enough money to get home and a backup plan when going to orientation............

    many many different dedicated accounts
Home Depot is one of the lowest mileage (alot of sitting around) but guaranteed a min of $700 no matter what (long as you worked a full week, and the $700 was the amount I was offered so it may be more now)

    Rikkett (spelling may be wrong)
This is what I ran and really liked it.. You will see NJ and MO alot with this account and in Springfield MO you will have really long dock times (very hard to get paid for your dock time) But you will get good miles long as you stay on top of them (3000-3600)

    Werner..
Why not? well they pay really bad and lie about pay (something US Xpress didn't do to me or nor have I heard them do it to anybody else)
    Low miles...

Paperless logs.. I would not like it but some (mostly older guys) like it...

One plus about them is they pretty much hire anybody who attends orentation.. So, pretty much no worries there about getting sent home

Thanks for the informative reply. I hope that more will give me input as from my standpoint, it is a toss up between these two for my area. Some love them, some hate them. I want to hear constructive comments, good and bad, to help me decide.

i drove for werner for a short time. they claim to be family oriented, but told me that i needed to leave the hospital my 31 DAY old baby was in at the end of my hometime, w/ an empty trailer, to haul their freight. i never asked about getting paid for extra time off, but did tell them that i would not leave from home until my baby got home. this was a huge problem # that time. also, that paperless log was not as good as it was cracked up to be. cheated me out of time alot. most days it would tell me i was running short on my 14 less than 10 hrs after my pre-trip.

never driven for us xpress, but have talked to alot of their drivers, doesn't seem too bad, as long as you can get miles, and don't mind the auto-shift truck.

Still hoping that others who have worked for or are working for either of these companies would give some information to help with this decision.

I have not worked for either of them, however , a co worker of mine did drive for USX as a husband/ wife team. She said they made excellent money while they were there. Autoshift trucks are OK. Don't knock 'em til you try 'em. I like them. As for W, I can't drive 62 or 63 mph all day. I get bored and start falling asleep. If the speed limit is 70 then go 70. those slow vehicles mess up the traffic flow. Not a lot of help but it's my 2 cents worth.:biggrin_25512:

I haven't worked for either of these companies but know people who have. If I had a choice I would go with USX.

Why? Decent equipment and miles is what I got from the drivers I know.

I personally would never work for Werner. Why? Because in the past few years their equipment has gone down hill and their pay stinks. Most of the drivers I know who do work for them say they have more problems with dispatch and their equipment than any other people I know.

Wish I could tell you about an alternative company where you would get your miles, better pay, and you are good with your experience. Think you should expand your search a little more. I work for a national company that wasn't even hiring in my state when I applied.
