Rick, the job suxs, we know, so do a lot of other jobs. It's work, you make the best of it and take it for what its worth. You won't get rich or make 100 or 200 grand a year being trucker Rick, not going to happen. There are decent paying jobs in the trucking industry. Like any other industry, you have to be willing to put the time and effort in to get one of those jobs. Does it happen for everybody that comes into the industry, no, it doesn't. Obviously it has worked out for you since you claim to have been at it for most of your life. Am I going into it with blinders on, no, richard, I'm not. I can very well read between the lines and know there are a lot of pitfalls in this industry. It is all about how you deal with those challenges when presented to you.

We all know they're not great but if someone isn't afforded the choice to pay for it themselves, what are some good company sponsored schools

Doesn't matter where you go. It's gonna be a rough first year. I worked for CRST in the past but I would only recommend them if you are desperate. Running dedicated for them was good but I never met an expedited driver that liked them much. The pay is low even for a new driver. If you have a truck stop near by, go pick up some of the free pamphlets they have out by the fuel island where the trucks fuel. They are loaded with companies that have free training. I've seen them advertise on Craigslist and the other online job sites like indeed or careerbuilder.

It's all about getting that license and learning the ropes. Make sure you keep your record clean, don't let them push you!

Free training as in=free training with 1 yr commitment?
I have yet to find one company that completely trains for free with no strings.

Are there any companies out there that do not have this "debt slavery"? I was talking to truckers from the past and they was telling me how certain companies didnt enforce these rules so strictly. But from what I gather today, things must've changed allot.

Hah...Well your experience is definitely unique. Most people, (no one but those who are blessed) would have unlimited access to a truck for a week. Truly independent is only a route for people entirely gifted such as yourself. Yeah I guess I gotta truck it up at a school after-all.
