Hey fellas, I'm looking to buy a truck to run a set of super B trailers (63,500kg or 140,000lbs) to haul grain in my farming off-season. I think I'll need about 500-550hp and 3.73-4.10 gears, 18 spd for sure,I don't really care about rubber because 24.5 would be nice for getting out of soft fields and yards, but 22.5 is nice for saving weight. Fuel economy is important but with that much weight and only travellinmg at most a few hours at a time it might be negligible. My question is, what engine/truck combo is going to be the best on my bottom line when it comes to repairs and downtime. I'd like to get a good used pre-emissions truck but I'm toying with the idea of going new so that I would be the only owner. I can turn a wrench but only have experience with the 3406 that we have in an L9000 on the farm, and with newer ISX from my fracking experience. I have a soft spot for a Pete since I've spent a lot of time with them fracking, but they seem to command a premium, I'm open to anything though. If I went new I've been looking at an International 9900i with ISX or FL Coronado with the DD16. I apologize for the long winded post, but your thoughts?

You can't go wrong with a Pete with an 3406e/c-15 Cat and a 18spd for your job but you'll pay pretty good money for a good one nowadays. You can find some pretty nice 9900i Internationals for more reasonable money that would do the job for you. Most likely have a Cummins in it though.

Glider. If you are planning on keeping it. Pre emissions motor and a new truck like you want. Sounds like the way to go. Lots of options with a petercar.

No its not really a bad thing there are a lot of ISX's out there doing heavy work without a ton of problems. I just think a 2000-2007 Cat is a little more trouble free and will have more power/torque. Gliders are such a grey area in Canada I don't know if I would go that way. A friend got one last summer. It's a heavy spec Coronado with a 500 hp detroit /18spd and I think 46 rears with 13,200 front axle. He bought it as a powered glider with no rear ends. It's a sharp truck with forward exhaust and full side fairings with a midroof bunk. I pretty sure he had most of 100,000 grand in it when he put it on the road with 3yr drivetrain warranty on the engine/trans and whatever freightliner offers on the rest. It went together pretty easy but they did have some quality control issues with interior pieces and air leaks etc but freightliner did them under warranty with no big hassles.

RIV will NOT allow anymore imported gliders. I checked into this myself. There is an outfit in SK that is selling newer gliders. I saw a couple Freightliner Classic's, 2011's w/ new reman N14's in em. Thats how I would go if you want to buy new. From what I know and hearing the horror stories of my buddies who owned em, I wouldnt take an ISX if it was given to me for free, except to trade it in for scrap price.

Most dealers can order you a glider. You don't need to import it. The only issues seem to be getting them plated. That would be true no matter where you bought it though. People are getting it done apparently.
