If I bid $25,500 to go 290 miles I would not be taken seriously. That is way more than the market demands and shippers know it. Of the numerous calls I got while that was posted, nobody ever even suggested a rate more than $20K. I wish there were those kinds of margins in this business.

SMH, this is why I see $2 per Landstar mile all-in 10' wide "partials" on the board. The future looks bleak. At least you found a sucker to take it.

I can't speak for other agents, but I don't negotiate rate until I have a truck. The shipper gives me what they want to spend and I post it. If it has good money on it, I will call drivers in the area. If it doesn't, I don't. When a driver calls me about a lane he wants, he tells me what he wants in order to do it. Then, I call the shipper, and we negotiate the rate. I only have to make one trip to the well, and once the negotiations are done we either do business right away, or we don't. I've found that if I try to negotiate rate without a truck, I don't have any leverage. Even if I talk them up, it isn't enough and I have to ask for more money anyway. Now, they think I'm screwing them, because we decided on a fair rate, and I'm asking for more. There are agents who post loads higher than what they have negotiated, hoping you will call them, and banking on their ability to meet that rate once they get you on the hook. If they can't, they tell you the load's been covered. I don't do that. And, I tell customers every day that there is no such thing as an oversized partial.

I can't stand it anymore. Is it a cooling unit? Or some kind of hopper?

passingthru69 is right. At that rate your not considering all the time and BS you have to deal with to get it done. Time is money and you deserve to be compensated for it...all of it! you may not be getting a call because the price is to low. I know that sound odd but if they have price X in mind and you are to low they may think you can't do it or can't do it right. Try approaching it this way, how much time will you have in it including phone calls and so forth? add a cushion of say 20%. then figure that time at 200.00/hr for the truck. 75.00/hr for your expertise. Add permit costs and add an administrative fee for getting those permits, surveys and so on. See where you land. I don't know what city's you moving too but lets say its Baltimore to Boston. you have 400 miles of worst there is to deal with in the country...east coasters. It's a 6 hour drive by car. Its 2 days with what your doing. If it was me then they could cut a check for 12k or they could keep it. Good luck.

Why? I always avoid NYC and my route is always granted.
