i always heard that about A-1...... But I personally know a couple guys that went through there that now work for Sysco, and Pepsi .... So I think you'll be ok........
Are the test at DMV still written test or are they computerized now?

You know, I had to do the written test in The City (SFO). I didn't have an appointment...and I know you think I'm exaggerating...but I was there for (just over) five hours. I took all the tests on the same day (didn't want to go THERE again) and the exams were all still written.
I think A-1 must have new owners. I don't want to slander any company, but I'd say they got us into the truck right away (for skills practice). That was nice. But not too much in the way of instruction. Kinda taught myself with help from students who had been there a little longer. It was (mostly) perfect for my situation...no high pressure and you have to be VERY self-motivated to finish...no hand-holding at A-1. But, it would have been nice to have more driving-time on the streets and instruction to go along with that. You know the old saying..."ya git wutchya pafore"... I paid $2500. That's not why I went (lowball price). I went because I could still work AND go to school part-time.
I was hoping to go to Prime's PSD school with a "leg-up" (having gained some experience at A-1). That idea kinda back-fired on me. With my CDL in my hand, Prime is sending me straight to their orientation in Salt Lake City. Now I feel behind the curve because A-1 has me underprepared for going out on the road with a trainer. Oh well. Make the best of it and hope I get an understanding (patient) trainer. -
you STILL have a leg up: because you actually have your CDL......... FYI: I know "the city" very well. First day I ever drove a tractor trailer was right off the fremont st exit on a friday at about 5pm.... my buddy/co worker got off the bridge, pulled over, pulled the air, and said "if you can drive here right now- you can drive anywhere"...........
Anyway don't trip, you're gonna be fine, just talk to your trainer, and tell him what has you nervous: he either helps you, or you'll know right away you're on your own. From what i've read on here about prime, i think you'll be ok.
good luck, and keep us posted if you canquetzalcoatl Thanks this. -
Congrats good to hear you passed your test. I'll agree with condocruiser as well putting the truck in gear isn't the best option. I do it because its less work than getting out and chocking the wheels. But I have tried to start my truck when in a hurry with it sitting in gear.
Some trucks have an interlock so the starter won't engage unless the truck is in neutral, mine does not and I don't push the clutch in when I start my truck. The cuss words will start flying when you do that and getting it back out of gear is not a fun task after that happens. So I'd recommend picking up a chock block or making your own.
I understand what you mean I my pickups a manual and I was used to putting my foot on the brake now I forget to put my foot on the brake in my pickup lol...also forget its got a stupid clutch interlock too.quetzalcoatl Thanks this. -
Hi, were you tested on all the sections? In Ca DMV handbooks, were you tested on sections 7, 8, and 9?
-
I went ahead and took tests for those sections. You're not required to test from those sections to obtain the CDL. I didn't go for the passenger endorsement. Was encouraged to, but decided I didn't study enough for it.
-
Dam n! A-1 has buses there also? lol
I took the passenger endorsement too, but the dmv lady that was correcting all my test said she couldnt give it to me because I "didn't bring a bus" with me! lol -
Yeah, A -1 does bus training too. I'd say they had just as many people training for bus driving as Class A and Class B combined. They have some contract with the State Prison System to train drivers to drive those prisoners buses around.
