    Hello all,

So I have been looking at radios for freeway use and I found either of the above mentioned radios for good prices. While both are affordable, I need to know which will provide the most reach when I get it worked on at the shop. Which will preform best out of the box (both are stock)?

    Thanks for any input!

The 146GTL is an older single side band radio. Do you do much SSB talking?

SSB will talk father than straight AM, but the guy you're talking to needs to have a SSB radio.

The only thing the other radio has going for it, besides the sound tracker and the night time back illumination, is it has the built in weather which is good if you travel much and want to keep tabs on if there's any bad storms coming up. It will alert you in a warning tone, plus you can get the local forecast.

If it were me, I'd get the 146 since it's the better built, however if you don't use sideband, then the other will be more beneficial to you.

I have never had a radio with side band so I guess I should ask if enough people have it to make it a good choice.

I'd go with the 146 GTL even if you are not into SSB.The 146 was always in the shadow of it's big brother the 148 GTL.I have always thought the 146 was the better of the two even though it lacked some of the nonessential features of the 148.It is harder to add channels to the 146 but if you do not plan on doing any frebanding, it isn't a big deal.

I have no plans to expand channels, just the physical reach of the tx/rx.

Both radios will transmit roughly the same but in my personal experience I have found that the 146 has a better receiver.

Found a good condition 29ltd with some work done on it so I went ahead and grabbed it up. Place called Dr. Radio inside the T/A on 75 at the dixie hwy exit in Michigan.

The SoundTracker is only an advantage if *every person" with whom you're going to converse also has ST on their radio and remembers to engage. It's a sort of COMpressor and exPANDER circuit that's used in commercial telephony to emphasize the frequcncies used in voice commucnitations so the parts that are used to imparat intelligense (and i use the therm lloosely here) are enhanced in transmit and extracted in receive. It's supposed to amplify the voice frequcncies m0re the ambient line noise. It only works if both (0r all) -parties have the feature engagedl Knda lseems iike Cobra tried tio instigute a new standard abonG CB users, and my guess is that it fell flat. So I'd compare the SSB rig with the Cobra without the ST feature and see what works better for you.
