If you have sleep apnea and are being successfully treated what do the mega carriers want you to bring to orientation to show that you are in DOT compliance and that you use the CPAP machine and it is working?

I have been using a CPAP for 5 years. Swift and Werner were both ok with it last year. Now I here that companies require people that have necks larger than 17" and BMI of over 33 to get a sleep test. I already had a sleep test 5 years ago and CPAP works great for me. In fact, I am so use to the mask, I cannot sleep without it.

Like I said, I just told the people at Swift and Werner, they gave me a 1 year card. After quitting Werner, I went in and got a DOT Physical at a health clinic and they gave me a 2 year card (got that in March).

So my question is what proof do the companies need to show your are in compliance?

What you should do if your cpap has a chip in it is to download it and get a print out of your usage. When I go for a DOT physical I show the doc a copy and they will put a copy in there file with the long form. Not sure why you have to bring it to orientation because a company is not qualified to read it, it's the clinic that gives the ok for you not a company employee, but then again, I've never worked for a mega-carrier and never will......

You should get another sleep study and get a doctor for the needed ongoing therapy (I'm assuming that you have one because you must be getting supplies some how). If your cpap machine doesn't have a smart card in it, then get one - if your insurance doesn't cover it, then you can get a script from you doc and buy one - they are about $150 or so referb.

You just have to show at least 70% compliance in using your CPAP. That's all I had to do. And that is for FOT Med card. I am" however, surprised you got a 2 year card. I use one and can only get a 1 year.

I was wondering, did they up compliance? Last I heard it was 60% but that was a few years ago. Even at 70% I am still ok.......

I got a two year card, becuase I was not driving. I went into one of those fly by night clinics and told them I did not have sleep apnea and never had it. I was not planning on going back into driving when I got the medical card, so I did not see the harm. I just needed a medical card so that my CDL would not lapse.

I was planning to be honest and get a correct 1 year card if I got back into trucking, which is why I am doing this now. Trying to figure out how to be perfectly legal starting out..

Thanks for all the great replies...

That's very strange. In March of 2011 I went in for my DOT and told them I was scheduled for a sleep test. They withheld my MC pending the results of the test. Had the test. Got a CPAP, been using it ever since.

A few weeks later I had the results, gave them to the physician. I was issued my MC. Took the CPAP with me otr, used it, no issues at all with my company. I have renewed my MC every year since then with no problems or no inquiries at all.

Well I decided to bit the bullet and get all the paperwork that anyone could ever want. I printed my card data from my ResMed CPAP machine (Printed a years worth), Printed a Summary, Printed Statistics, Got an appoointment at VA pulmonary doc to tell me I am good and got an appointment at a private sleep doc. ######.... One of those should work!

What they are looking for is untreated SA. If you have been using your machine, at least 70% compliant, you won't have any problems.
