Too many factors to consider, too many opinions out there - let's bring it all into one place, and seek professional opinion from forum members. For a flatbed truck to haul cargo cross country, which truck you think is better overall (#1 consideration - cost of ownership [fuel, replacement parts, insurance], #2 - driver's comfort, #3 re-sale value):
1. Kenworth T680
2. Kenworth T700
3. Kenworth T800
4. Volvo VNL64T670
5. Volvo VNL42T670
6. PETERBILT 587
My own favorite - Peter 587, but two truckers-friends swear by Volvo VNL42T670.
What do you think, and recommend, and why?

Any good running 20k truck with about 500k sounds good enough to me.

They are definitely not all equal - one of them is better for the job than the rest. Or at least two can tie - but not all 6.

I would build a KW glider kit with a CAT 2003 or older. I personally like the narrow cab and it can be converted to a day cab if your area has a strong market for them. Volvo doesn't have as big of a dealer network as Paccar. This is more important if you spec the manufacturer drive train instead of cummins, eaton, meritor. I know Volvo has a smooth ride, but I hate the feel of the road in them. I would pick the KW 680 (OK W900L is my pick) from your list. That or by a 2003 or older truck (pre emission) and fix it up. I've just never liked a truck I've driven other than a Pete or KW. #1 the KW 680, #2 the Pete.

All are capable of being lemons. If I had to choose from this list I would take T 800 . T660 should be on that list. There is a thread entitled " My new truck will be...." on this forum, bashing the T 680.

all are ok in a mid roof condo wastes too much fuel in decks

Ditto
For a deck stay away from a condo.
If you get a mid roof, take off the roof flaring, if it has onedaytonaoh Thanks this. -
There is only one truck on the list that I would personally own and that is the KW T800. You should really look at the T660's too. Cab, engine, rears and suspension are all basically the same as the T800. I would stay away from the T680's too many new controllers and functions that a truck does not need. I can see repairs being very costly down the road. Also stay away from the T700. As with the 680 as well everything is harder to get to, motor is burried under the HVAC box, have a hard time getting under them etc. All of this leads up to more repair time. The T800 and T660 are far easier to work on and are far better trucks in my opinion.

Thanks for weighting in. I did see the thread on T680 - scary thing, feel very sorry for the owner.
Do you think the T800 has similar or better fuel economy than Pete 587 or Volvo? Journal articles on Pete 587 claim it has the best fuel mileage, whereas others says that since it's owned by the same company as Kenworth, they should be the same, or even Kenworth would be a little better being the darling in the family. -
Thank you, it becomes clear that T680 should be disqualified from the list, as should probably be T700.
Assuming that T800 is the best Kenworth, what do you have to say about the two Volvo's and Pete 587?
