These things you mention are only "requirements" if you want to keep your job - it's not like any private company can force you into anything. You can walk away whenever you want. Transporting the remains may be the nice, acceptable, "right" thing to do, but demanding "there ought to be a law" because of the way things happened is pathetic. Should there be a law requiring that the company gets you home on time? Should they be required to give you a certain number of miles? It's the same principle, on a far smaller scale - you want to force things to happen a certain way because.... why? You "feel" that they should? I see your point, and if all the claims are true, SRT was cruel and heartless to let this happen. But that doesn't make them responsible for covering that cost, no matter how "bad" that may seem...

Yeah, "It's not a choice, it's a child" people? If you make it past abortion, and grow up to be a truck driver, then die, well....sorry.

Like George carlin said about the "right to life" crowd.... And I'll leave it at that.
Freezer Burn and mje Thank this. -
I've been off work since the end of February and only just heard about this. I'm off because I had a heart attack just before I crossed the border. Now I see this #### company doing something like this to a person who pays the company's bills?! Why would anyone want to drive for this company or the others in this company group? Southern is a part of the Covenant Transport Group which includes these companies...Why work for any of them;... Covenant Transport, Southern Refrigerated Transport (SRT), Star Transportation (Star), Covenant Transport Solutions, Transport Financial Solutions (TFS) and Transport Enterprise Leasing (TEL)

Oh the bitter irony. Must have taken a lesson from the Mafia, it's business! There's just an extra sting because of their obnoxious flaunting of their so-called christian "principles".
WWJD, eh?
Interesting, I caught a bit of the history of Jesus on the Military Channel this morning, the times he lived in, and how he most likely came to having sympathy and great compassion for the poor. Of course, he WAS poor and saw the great disparity between those that lived highly affluent livestyles and then the big chasm until it reached the other side where the people like himself resided. Covenant....yeah..right.
I would agree that they perhaps have no legal obligation to help the loved ones of their deceased driver, but good grief..a moral one I would think given how they sell themselves. Presenting the bill was just the coupe de gras in this whole debacle.
Greed and callousness is still greed and callousness even when it comes wrapped with a cross and a bible.Sojourn14, OPUS 7, Freezer Burn and 1 other person Thank this. -
Im not as jacked up about the Christian stance they have,as some of you are.
We have all met/known people making a living claiming to be something theyre
not.
Whats absolutely disgusting,is the fact that ANY company would kick you,and your
family when you passed away driving for them.
We as drivers seem to always get the dookie end of the stick. If this driver had walked away from his truck, after it quit
on him,he would have it on his record, and it would go against him in the future.
But..the company can quit the driver, and leave you dead or alive, and theres no crime in it?
This driver, like the rest of us probably went without seeing his family, sleeping well,or eating well, and they thanked him
by not even getting the poor guy home.
R.I.P. Drivermje, TennTrucker and Sojourn14 Thank this. -
It is always an unfortunate event when a loved one passes away. Even harder when it happens far from home. I noticed the family had the driver cremated, as this is usually the only choice.
It costs several thousand dollars to transport a body a long distance. Sometimes the only choice is to have the deceased cremated, and their remains (ashes) mailed home.
I agree the company should of done more, but trucking companies are all about the bottom line. If it was an executive, they would of done more. Drivers are considered the bottom of the barrel.
There is a certain hatred and disdane for truck drivers by the trucking companies. Situations such as this give them a chance to show how they really feel about their drivers, which is very little.mje Thanks this.
