Anyone know about this school? I'm thinking of attending the Asheboro, NC classes in a few weeks. I could also do my local community college for much less money, but a lot more time (4 weeks at FTA vs. 18 weeks at commnity college!). Comments and observations appreciated.
Also, I'll be 66 yrs old in excellent health and have passed my DOT medical/drug tests. What are the chances of getting a decent OTR or team job after graduation? Again, comments appreciated.

You say your health is good, so nothing to worry about that....just pick what program you feel comfortable in and go for it...my advice to you in choosing co's is this...
Research every company throughly...plenty of info on both side here to read over....but I will say this much...
stay away from CR England period. -
Thanks for the advice. What's the best way to research schools and to know how well they place their graduates? Everyone just gives me the same old pablum: "oh we're the best and have hundreds of recruiters eager for our grads...." Ugh!
By the by, CR England sounded fairly good, just more hype?? What's up?
Thanks for your reply

Chances of a good OTR job or teaming after graduation? 100% chance! The best annual pay is with flatbed or tanker, but, there's some good money in teaming with a refrigerated carrier if you do West Coast turns back to back. Not the mega-refrigerated carriers, but some of the lesser known companies such as Martin Enterprises of the Carolinas. A flatbed company like System Transport pays teams .50 cpm split and they do some serious miles; 48 states, Canada, Alaska. Marten Transport pays teams 46.5 cpm split, but don't know if they do back to back West Coast turns. If you see a company you're interested in, call and ask which school they recognize, the 4 week or the 18 week. Start researching with questions on the "Questions From New Drivers" thread. Don't worry, finish the school, pass the physical & you will be hired. If you want to run Canada & Alaska, get a passport. Get your tanker/hazmat endorsement before you graduate also.

I live in NC and decided to go to Roehl for my training. It was 3 weeks long and a pretty decent experience. They have since changed their training period time a bit so I can't comment on that but it still is in the neighborhood of a month with a trainer or so. The cost up front were minimal (hotel, food, etc. perhaps 400.00). If you drove for them for 60K miles half your loan debt was cancelled and if you drove 120K miles (roughly a year) it was all cancelled. All in all my time there was ok and as a starter company I think you could do a lot worse. Best of luck in your choice.

JBS Carriers has some program they will pay for your private CDL school then payroll deduction to pay back. It's an OTR refrigerated company. Don't know the details, but call and ask if interested.

Future truckers is ghetto. But overall you'll have a good time and learn the basics. Randy the owner is all about saving a dollar.

Here's some good team coast to coast companies in the Carolinas:
WLA Inc.
Cooke Trucking Company
Hardy Bros. Inc. -
Thanks Chinatown. I appreciate your suggestions. I'll look into them now that I've "graduated" from Future Truckers. I'd really like to get into special event trucking or something outside the regular freight lines. It'll all unfold properly, I'm sure.
