It really is not that hard. But, I guess the background of accounting makes it seem really easy to me. There are simple programs currently available to do the work.

→Thanks everyone for the input, much appreciated! Feel free to add your own if you haven't already, definitely helps :)

Spending quite some time looking at the existing solutions I came to realize that it will be a significant challenge to come out with a compellingly innovative product / superior value proposition for the US market.

Personally I don't have 1st hand experience but my partner's family business is a trucking company (we're not from the US though) so we have a solid insight into the workings and the problems of the industry, although there's probably a lot more to learn, especially about the practices and regulations in the US.

To all the people who use just Excel — why don't you use a solution made for truckers, or accounting software? Is it a cost optimization tactic or you simply don't any value in what's offered?

It's crossed my mind. And the notes are there to develop.

It'll be a couple years though before it would be released. It would suck to write an advice book and then have the business fail....:biggrin_25521:

An excell spreadsheet and TurboTax . . . pretty simple once you understand what needs to be kept track of.

My accounting is ALL done with Quicken Home & Business. More than powerful enough for what I need and there are still features I am just now starting to use. It handles ALL of my AP/AR as well as financial statements, tax forms and categorizing.

The excel spreadsheets I use are purpose specific. One each for IFTA, per diem, load tracker and trip reports (these last two really could be combined, but the trip reports also feeds the IFTA spreadsheet)

The trucking software I have found puts so much garbage into the package I don't want. I see no value in tracking fuel BY the load. It's not needed. Same with maintenance. It's two different cost basis' for me. If it's load specific, I can always go into Quicken H&B and create a "project invoice" and link everything to that.
