I'm looking to build a RV soon and I think this will get me where I want to go
Looks like a 466 and a Allison. Not sure if it;s a turbo, but I am concerned about the final drive ratio. The 5 ton military trucks came out with pretty steep gears that were only good for 55 MPH. Replacement gears are expensive especially since I will need 3 pairs.

Can Anyone Tell Me about This 6x6 IH?

why would you build an RV on such a heavy dudy truck. Why 6x6. Can you imagine how horrible the fuel economy is? Unless your planning on taking your rv off roading this is a very poor start to your rv.

that's not an RV Clark.

The fuel mileage couldn't be any worse then your spelling

I'm building a retirement RV. It will be going into the middle of nowhere. With a fold down ramp, my Scout will be easy to load. It won't see a lot of miles and the DT466 runs good on veggie oil. I hope it will run decent on engine oil as well.Last edited: Aug 5, 2013

Im all for running veg in a truck. Anything pre dpf will run on veg with a conversion. i still don't get why you would get a 6x6 for an rv. Way to much to maintain if your not planning on going off road. You could load your scout on any other type of truck.

This would be a great truck to have for after the Zombie Apocalypse! Other than the heavy driveline, this is only $1000 truck. Nearly $20000 for this 30 year old dinosaur is kinda crazy. Once you are done re-gearing this, you can buy something else a lot nicer and newer as it. I can't tell you anything about it, the VIN is too old for me to run.
379exhd Thanks this. -
Seems these older trucks get priced by only looking at the odometer. There's no telling how many mice have made this truck their home. I could probably dump another few thousand into it to bring up reliability and get rid of those dryrotted rubber parts.

Chances are this truck sat around most of its life. That can be a blessing or disaster depending on how often it was run and looked after. Even with low miles or hours, it is still the actual time here that may be an issue. Like you said, there will be a fair amount of dry rot and overall gasket and seal degradation.

You need a reality check, this is too heavy for being out in the middle of no where.
I would take a look at http://www.expeditionportal.com first, read all that you can read, ask questions about what others are using.
I wouldn't go with this even if I needed something heavy duty, number one problem is where do you get parts for it. Just because it is military does not mean it is built for occasional maintenance or long distance diving. -

If I had the cash a few months ago....
All of the outside sheetmetal was included in the sale. GO BIG OR GO HOME!
It's not like it's going to see 100k miles a year. The IH isn't a real military truck. Parts availability should be as easy as going down to my local dealer except for the front axle and transfer case which is a conversion.
This is bare minimum, I don't want to flat tow my Scout. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/expedition-vehicles/933305-f-700-4x4-camper.html
So far nobody has any info about this truck
