Thanks for all the info. I must have been looking in the wrong places. I'm really not very good at internet researching, I guess. lol

Just asking, have you considered trying to get on as a trucking company sales rep?
A lot of haulers are looking for customers and you said you had a background in home improvement?
A lot of that stuff is pretty heavy. And you don't have to limit yourself to the mega-carriers.
Some local 5 unit mom & pop might kill to get a regular run of pvc pipe.
Have you maintained contacts from you home improvement days? Might look well on a resume going into a trucking company. -
If you decide to send 1 application out to many, many companies,
do not include your phone number or email ddress.
Set up another email account, and use that.
They don't need a phone number, yet.
Trust me,
it will save you alot of aggevation in the future......Bumpy Thanks this. -
Everyone here has offered very good advice. Your only limit to your situation is living in FL. You definitely need to look at the larger companies for hiring out of FL. Start with, who hires in FL and do they have a driving school.

look at con way, in illinois they will help you get your cdl.

I didn't see this mentioned but a lot of the companies that train will hire you and bus you to their training center wherever it may be in the US and train you and then when you start driving for them, home time will just be a matter of your dispatcher finding a load going close to where you live to get you home. The company doesn't have to have a terminal close to you. Just a thought though. This might affect how quick or how often you get home, but they will still get you home. I know Knight and Prime do this as well as CR England but you want to stay away from England fer sure. Also with your background in home improvement you could just rent a truck to practice in and take your test in it and get your class A and then get a lower paying job with Lowe's or Meeks or another home improvement center or lumber yard with a tractor trailer and work for them for a year to get some experience. I have a friend doing this with Meeks right now. They put him on a straight truck to begin with to be sure he could drive and then after a month they started having him fill in on the big truck when the driver was out and after three months he now drives one full time. With no experience driving one though you would probably have a slower path getting into the big truck because my friends dad is an O/O so he had quite a bit of experience driving one even though he just recently got his license and made it legal, LOL.

That company looks to be a mandatory straight shot into a forced lease, I wouldn't even consider leasing for my first five years I think. For sure not in the first 6 months, LOL

Bear in mind that Central Refrigerated is now owned by Swift as of last week.
If a company is doing a heavy sales job on a lease/purchase.... run, don't walk, to the nearest exit.... or at least have the good sense to say "no" and stay on as a company driver until you have experience and enough money to make a proper down payment on your own truck. Don't lease from the same company that dispatches your loads.DoneYourWay Thanks this.
