Down economy is imo the best time to start a business. But, one ought to have some fundamental understanding of the business they're entering. Having friends and family who drive doesn't mean anything.

As Dinomite admitted, he doesn't own a truck. I stopped reading at that point. Make sure someone will lease you on before you buy that truck. If all you want to do is pull cans in the tri-state area, there isn't much to running your business. Buy a 10,000 truck, have 10k in the bank at least and you're all set. Make sure tolls are reimbursed wherever you lease to. I imagine you'll park at your dads crane business or at whoever your leased to's yard. Good luck.

Now that is the funniest thing I ever heard. But there is some truth to that statement. Since this is the internet. You have to be careful of whose advice you take because there would be a whole lot more. I told you so's then those who help you get out of the jam that their sound advice gave you. -
Instead of speculating about it, I've done it, and in the very same region he's looking to do it. That's experience in my post, not someone commenting on something they've never done, which seems to be the case around here lately.RedForeman Thanks this.

Best thing i ever did for myself was buy a truck and became my very own boss...I wish i would of done it in my 1st year.I waited till just after that...I would never turn back..
I have a very wonderful life and i am blessed..If i was still in a COMPANY TRUCK i would never have the LIFE i have today...
I started my O/O with containers years ago from NYC/NJ to Buffalo NY..I learned alot and the ''risk'' was not that big..It worked out great for me and then i started my climb to bigger and better...After i left the containers i fell flat on my face and was ''LIVING'' in a truck.I was merely surviving and NOT LIVING.Thats all i had to my name AT THE TIME.A truck and the clothes in the truck....Pitiful lifestyle i was living..
That is when i ran into an Italian ''old timer'' from NY and he taught me this BUSINESS.He even got me started with L/S..Thank God for this guy..We still talk weekly and he is retired..He still calls me a dumb ####
and i still keep listening to him when i screw up...

You don't have to jump out a plane without a parachute to know it's not a very good idea, and the success rate in doing so is very limited. I'm sure if Someone post about it. Then it is more likely to happen. LOL

There are many many successful BRIGHT HARD WORKING owner ops that did this in there first year and some right out of school..We even have many that came here from another country and are doing good and they don't even speak ENGLISH...
