It's easy to walk away when your in your first year at a mega carrier. You can make the same at a regular job working 40-50hrs a week in a warehouse home everyday. I was living in a small town with no jobs so mega carrier pay was 100-150 a week more then what I could make. It depends on the individual situation. He had a job market and was making more then took a pay cut sounds like. If I lived in a better job market I probably wouldn't be trucking either but in the end trucking is making me better money then most regular jobs with or without college. Glad I stuck it out.

Truckers urinate in truck stop parking lots with a rest room inside? An unwillingness to walk across the parking lot gives a whole new definition to lazy.
That's not a trucking industry problem, that's an individual business problem. Shop someplace else.

He's talking about driving until the end of His hours, hoping that there is one available as compared to stopping earlier while even though he still could drive, but is much more likely to find a spot.

I hear ya,thank GOD for making us all SO different. However it's not the land or preferred activities,it's the "so called officials" that run that area into the ground. I have family in Horseshoe Bay. I make them come to my house!! Lol

Enjoy the boats driver, don't forget the water, and umbrellas! OMG been there done that,IT'S HOT OUT THERE!!! Btw... I read somewhere those "officials" blew up the M.Falls bridge and besides fouling up the implosion, built a bigger bridge?

after awhile you tend to learn how parking is in certain areas at certain times, if your driving until midnight though then expect to have slim pickings for a parking spot, if I have plenty of time on a load I shut down before 7pm and get me a spot. Load im on doesnt deliver until 8am tomorrow but I drove 7 miles from the spot and parked at 1pm today, I had 3/4 of the lot to choose from which was nice.
If im driving my full 11 and its getting late I normally dont even bother with a truck stop, its probably going to be a rest stop or the side of the road somewhere.

As far as personal safety goes, any risk in parking at rest stops or on the side of the road?

Rest areas are usually not bad. Parking on the side of the road is not allowed, except in emergency, and outside of some shippers/receivers, but never on the interstate except for emergency

well it depends, I parked on the side of the 15 about 30 miles south of Chino, CA a couple days ago since there are no rest stops or truck stops in that area but there are huge pull outs on the sides of the interstate in certain areas, other trucks in spots were parked as well.
There are also other interstates that have truck pullouts, believe I have seen a few on the 40 but never used them and a few other places.

As for rest areas I choose them since they are easier and quicker in and out plus normally pull through and they fill up slower than a truck stop. Most truckers want to be at a truck stop so they can stuff their face with food etc. I keep food and plenty of drinks on my truck, I mostly use truck stops for just fuel and occasionally food and a drink.

I know parking on ramps is illegal too in most areas but trucks do it, most troopers will leave you alone since they know your just trying to get some sleep.

I just kind of lump the pullout spots in with rest areas. There are some of those along 281 down in south Texas. Texas is putting in some more rest areas now too, which is nice to see.
