Just trying to get idea on what is better I am torn between two trucks one is a 1990 peterbilt 378 it runs and has 800k miles it was owned by a towing company have all papers on repairs . Then there is a 1997 international 9400i 1 . 3 mil miles. They both have the same horse power the peter has 9 speed and international has 18. They both have papers on all repairs and both working great.

To buy a truck without any experience in this business is HIGHLY ill advised for several reasons. First of all, to own a truck requires a new level of dedication that company drivers don't necessarily feel the pressure of. When you buy a truck you are basically starting your own business. It's a commitment that shouldn't be taken lightly or underestimated. I suggest you drive for a minimum of 2 years as a company driver to "get your feet wet" in the business and to save money for the hidden and guarenteed expenses you'll have as an O/O. A good rule of thumb is to have at least a month's wages saved when making the transisiton to O/O. That way if your new purchase requires work or it suffers an unexpected breakdown you will have the finances to fall back on and not have the threat of losing everything hanging over your head.
One thing to remember. Trucks are mechanical objects. They do, and will, break down. The trucks you've posted here are both high mileage trucks. You are risking major breakdowns with those kinds of miles on on them, regardless of how well they've been maintained. If you have to make payments on a truck with those high miles and something major breaks, you'll be scrambling to cover the cost of everything.
I just hate to see you get in over your head right out of the gate.

What if it was a 2001 with 295,000 miles on it and I could get it for 4 grand, and pay cash for it? Just add bobtail insurance and lease yourself out to a company and let them provide the cargo insurance/ and find the loads, and they provide the trailer/ so all you have to do is run? In this scenario would a 15 year old felony still keep me from being hired? Im buying it anyway even if I just tag it for personal use and put my camper on back! I know the truck and the owner well! Its a California truck and with the new emissions laws the Cali market is flooded, some of these trucks may go low as 2 thousand dollars. The one I have my eye on has the cummins engine I believe, Day cab only! But if nothing else Ill haul hay with it. And just run around in the country in it. But I would be curious to know if they would hire me with a 15 year old felony DWI if I have my own truck. Would this even help my position any?

sounds like a good plan. I just have 0 experience with getting a job with a bad record, I wish I could help with what to do for that situation.
