I am currently a OO on a lease, I am driving a 06 freightshacker Columbia sleeper, with a Detroit 60 450hp. It is literally the slowest truck with a load. With 40k on back, it struggles to get to 60. 600k with new turbo, am im stuck with it until I buy something...
My previous truck was a 03 KW with a 445 kitty, I loved it, but they sold it, and I dont really want to spend that kinda money to get something in the 06+ range(loan)
My max budget is 30k.
Ive been looking for Cummins and cat day cabs, I do local intermodal within 100 miles and deal with alot of tight docks. Ive only been able to find 330-370hp ones for the price range
Would these motors be able to handle these loads better than the DD450? Or should I keep looking for 425+.
Looking to buy daycab, But what engine should I look for?

look for columbia glider kit with 12.7 500 HP daycab

I do city intermodal work and I don't think a daycab is needed. Yes docks are a pain but once you get use to the truck it's not bad. Just don't get some large wheel base or sleeper.
If you have a dealership that's close to where you park I'd get a truck in that make. Trust me it sucks going across town to get a part when a diff dealer is much closer.
for city work just get what you can get and make sure it runs good and appears to not be leaking anything. -
The shorter wheel base is the main thing im looking for, if I could get away with a single axle rear I would, but it wont handle the weight and the 8x comes in handy in the 3-18" of snow on the streets the city never plows....
That 03 pete looks interesting.
how bad is the mpg on those? This truck im using now is getting 4.5 heavy loaded, it gets 6 on light loads but trying to maintain speed on the highway with the heavy loads just eats the fuel.
I have to maintain 60mph on these 70mph highways or DOT will issue a impeding ticket
I was told a ISX motor gets good mpg and will haul heavy, any opinions? -
If you could get the truck a different tune it would be a worlds difference. But I don't think you can on a lease?

Boss has an 01 KW T800 day cab hes looking to sell. N14 500 HP, super 10, I think right around 600k on it. Good straight clean truck. Were in MN if you're interested send me a pm and I'll get you in touch with him.

seems to me America needs cabovers for urban application
-
I don't believe so, it has a lot to do with the driver.

You should consider an older truck that wouldn't have egr. Most likely a 2002 or older.
A non-egr engine is simpler and should be less trouble and cheaper to maintain plus better mpg.
I saw a post about a guy wanted to get some older trucks out of CALIFORNIA because at the end of this year many of those older trucks become illegal there due to CA emissions laws.
Btw, your current truck should pull better and do better mpg than its doing. It needs to go to a shop with a good engine mechanic. A friend of mine had same engine and was getting 5.5 mpg. He went to the shop and now it gets 6.5mpg.
I think there are adjustments for turbo and egr.
