After six years in China teaching English I was sure truck driving school was my stepping stone back into Canadian society. I was sure after all the research I had done that I could get a job. I hired an immigration consultant for my wife and said goodbye. I dealt with all the forms and translations and notarizations and tax issues. I paid cash for truck school got my ACZ licence. I have a fist full of certificates and my FAST card. Now no trucking company will give me a chance because I don't have experience. That's ########. I can't get a job because of the current economic situation. Later when the market does pick up I'll be faced with an abundance of competition from other newbies trying to get into company training programs. If I don't start working as a truck driver soon many companies wont hire me later. They want fresh graduates. If you are thinking about truck driving school I suggest you wait until at least April or May before you start. Another thing, some schools give you an insurance certificate that is worth two years driving experience. Mine is from the TTSAO (Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario). It isn't worth the paper it's written on. It has no value when choosing a school or when a company is looking at you. There's only one way to get experience. We all know what that is. Now I'm looking at the bleak dismal future of going back to China. More teaching and a lot more children. At least be with my loving wife again. One final thought. Before you give up what you have now for truck driving make sure you have a back-up plan. Don't make the Big Mistake I did.

Wow, don't give up too easily if it's what you want. The economy is still doing pretty good in Ontario. My miles are only down a little bit the last few weeks and that's as much the xmas/new year season as it is anything else. When did you finish school and what part of Ontario are you in?

Sure it has value. It doesn't mean you are as qualified as someone with two years experience. It does mean something to the insurance companies though and would give you an up on someone who attended a school that is not recognized as meeting the same standards.

Have you tried any alternative driving jobs like equipment hauling or dump trucks? A friend of mine from CDL school was set to go OTR, but one of his parents suffered a stroke and he needed to stay local. He hired on with an excavation company and they've been training him with dump trucks. He seems pretty happy with the pay.
