Seriously what is up with Minnesota drivers? Do they not teach merging here?

had a great week with nice driving. Left Wisconsin last Friday with a load to California, picked up a load in LA (there are no words to describe that place) tcalled that load in Barstow and took another drivers load back to Eau Claire, WI. Nice miles for the week.

Got a short load to Wakasha or however you spell it then picking up a load and heading to North Dakota for a Monday delivery.

We got a load out of wow in menasha Tuesday morning at 0200 headed for Cali with 3 stops in LA Thursday morning , Got those 3 delivered then headed up to the valley around the Bakersfield area with 3 pickups of grapes , that's headed for the market in Chicago for a Monday morning delivery. I will agree Cali is like its own world , but I would rather drive LA then Chicago any day . When you make a wrong turn in LA you can normally just go down a few streets and get turned around , Chicago on the other hand you will be looking at an unmarked bridge praying you can fit .

    That was me on 94!

Sitting at Supervalu in Bismarck, ND only been here once before and that time it took them 6 hrs to unload. So far today I've been sitting in the dock for 4 he's and still not done. It amazes me that these places where you have to pay a lumper take so long. Makes no sense.

good thing I don't own a trucking company, I'd be charging $100 an hr after two hrs.

You are getting detention with Wolding after 2 hrs. right? I'm sure you'd rather be driving but at least it's some compensation. Is it hard to find a load out of the Dakotas? Doesn't seem like there'd be much there.

Our detention pay kicks in at 2 hrs for some companies and 3 hrs for others.

Detention pay is another pet peeve of mine, not just with HOW but with all companies. Seems to me you should take the overall company average of miles per hour times driver pay and that is what should be paid for detention. The company should charge gross profit per hour running time plus 20% per hr and each part of an hr example at 2 hrs 10 minutes it will cost you an extra $87.

But then I don't understand why this industry keeps shooting itself in the foot all the time. I'm just a girl.

but thanks to the detention time I did not make it to my shipper in Fargo before the shipping office closed. Miles for the day 191. So not only did I lose money sitting in the dock I lost even more miles on the day by not being able to pick up. I slept at the receiver so my clock hadn't started.

Had $5 detention for 3hrs unload time last week. I'm like, are you serious? Saw 15 and even 7.50 before, but 5? That blew my mind.

A major blunder in the industry is the lack of regulation on shippers and receivers. One of the biggest stressors, if not the biggest, is our schedule. And our schedule depends soley on shippers and receivers.

I agree with Bram's assessment, and I would add that a way to regulate it is with the bills. Mandate that all bills which include an appointment time have the time arrived at the shipper stamped and initialed by the driver and receiver upon check-in, and then again when empty. If the delay is over 2 hours, shipper or receiver pays. Driver gets the cash, not the company.

I understand the need to provide customer service and do a little extra to keep them happy. What I don't understand is the trucking industry as a whole giving away so much that it truly hurts their bottom line. Over the years each company has cut rates added this and added that just to get the business and it has caused the whole industry to suffer.

As an example I am sitting in a dock in Fargo getting loaded because I was delayed yesterday I missed getting loaded by 20 min. As I sit in the dock I am looking at 2 of our trailers dropped here sitting empty. There is no reason for this wait. Those empties aren't making any money, in fact they are sitting there costing money. The trucking company assumes they will be ready. I often wonder if there's anyone tracking the trailer usage. I would imagine it one of those things that could fall through the cracks at a small company.

it only takes 2 hrs to unload a trl because the shipper chooses the resources and method. There is no reason a trailer shouldn't be unloaded in an hour. Instead they will have one guy unloading and organizing and putting the product away on shelves one by one. A lot of which could be done after the truck is gone. No value is placed upon the truck or drivers time.

Its a rant I could go on and on with.
