    Hello,

My name is Misty. My husband Scott and I are interested in becoming a husband and wife team and would like to know what kind of money you can make.

Is $10,000.00 or more pretty doable for long hauls?

We were thinking about hauling new and used cars cars and trucks?

What type of truck would be the best to purchase? We were also thinking about adding a studio the the cab. What are your thoughts on that?

What is the best and most lucrative type of cargo to transport?

Is there any money in short hauls?

I'm not familiar with all of the lingo so forgive my ignorance if I have used the wrong terminology.

Thanks for all of your help :biggrin_255:

There's many others that have personal experience at similar goals that will chime in, but I recommend searching for user: NoCoCraig and one of his post titles "Farm2Fleet". They (him & his wife) seem like "good people" & great information givers.

If neither of you have experience, you should consider teaming as company drivers for a year or two, so you can learn about trucking business before purchasing a truck. There are a couple of companies that train husband/wife teams. CRST and Central Refrigerated. I think CRST will train you without splitting you up during training.

Meantime, both of you get your tanker/hazmat endorsements, doubles/triples endorsements, TWIC and a passport. All this will make you more marketable for the better paying jobs.

At the top of this page are "CDL Practice Tests" for the endorsements. Google for TWIC location nearest you. The passport is for runs to Canada.

Join OOIDA, the business website for 0/0's. All your questions can be answered for becoming a successful Owner/Operator.

My wife (in the avatar) rode with me, but didn't drive, 48 states when I pulled refrigerated and also with tanker/hazmat. She loved it.

Good post; Farm2Fleet would be an excellent choice for owner/operator teams.

Investing in any business that you know absolutely nothing about always leads to hardship and/or failure. The trucking industry seems simple to outsiders, but it is far from it. Hang onto your money and if your long term goal is to own your own truck and be successful at it, then go to a decent truck school, then get hired onto a carrier for a year - year and a half. Get trained together as a team, or have the wife start first, while the hubby stays in old career paying the bills. If you can last for that first year together as a team, you will either be best friends, or dire enemies because a truck curtain does not slam shut the same way a door does. After a year+ together you will either love it or hate it (and each other). Also, you will have a tiny idea of what it is going to take to actually start becoming successful. No amount of reading and researching is going to teach you how to drive a truck for profitability, or teach you how to take a wrench to it from the side of the road when you break down. The truly successful long term owner-ops out here on the road did not get that way from simply buying a truck and putting freight behind it, hoping for the best. They are successful because they go far beyond the task of driving, wearing many 'hats' when necessary, such as driving, wrench turning, brokering, bookkeeping, tax preparing, negotiating, etc. the list is long.

Myself and my wife are very successful Owner-ops. Its a lot of hard work where driving, though necessary, is usually the least of our tasks, almost as if it were the reward for ensuring everything else in our day has been taken care of. We love it I think because we take the extra effort to do things right.

To get 10,000.00 per haul you will definently have to get into a specialized field, general V or R freight does not carry those type of rates. As mentioned above I would recomend becomeing company drivers for a while to learn the ropes before purchaseing your own truck.

    Hauling cars?

    $10k a month?

    I don't know.

I only know of two teams who clear over $10k a month and it took them five years to get there.

Maybe Misty, you need to slow down a bit, learn what the business is like before thinking of buying a new truck or setting high goals out of the gate.

Like any business start, a lot can hinge on past connections/experience that can be transferred. It also helps to have needed funds/backing during the startup. If you can keep finance charges out of the equation, you’ll be better off.

Welcome to the site and please keep us informed if you pursue the hauling industry.
