Can I get my MC and BOC-3 and let them sit dormant of a few months? Or do I need to wait till a month or so before starting operations?

As soon as your MC#/DOT#....And BOC-3 are active, you are good to go.....
Provided.....That you also have paid into the UCR and your 2290.....

So I can get my MC/BOC and let them sit for say 6 months then get UCR and 2290 the month I start ops?

Also like baha points out about insurance, what are some good companies for cargo insurance. I'll probably go with 1st Guard for tractor and trailer insurance.

You have 60 days from the date of your application to submit proof of insurance and your boc-3. After 60 days you have to re-submit. I think the fee is $80.

Unless you want to pay insurance premiums for a few months without running, I would wait until you are actually ready to hit the road.

Your MC & BOC-3 will be active immediately, however I'd let it mature for atleast 90 days, many people don't want to run you with a new MC#

Insurance is no biggie, do your research, you'll get a good rate.

I think you can have your authority without the insurance until you're ready to hit the road........then you can get it. (Don't quote me on this one, people I've seen do it could've been going in lopsided)

That is what I was thinking. Let it set for 3 to 6 months, then get the truck-trailer-insurance, and hit the road.

Be prepared for the phone calls from insurance companies within a few minutes of getting your O/A....

I did mine online and within a half hour....My phone was ringing off the hook.....
