Yep... I think you'll find that to be pretty common in the oil field jobs though. I have a nephew that works on a frac crew and he has the same problem.

I'll try to clear up some hazmat and twic confusion that is posted here. I did all my research for both here is what I know. Wish I knew this before doing my twic first.. I would have saved myself some money. So since I couldn't save myself some money, I'm hoping to help some other professionals save their hard earned money. I live in TX which doesn't reciprocate so I would have had to do my hazmat first in order to save any money. If TX did reciprocate I wouldn't care about the $5.00 difference and I would still have done the twic first. But that's just me.

25 States reciprocate the background check done by the TSA. If your state reciprocates it then; you can do either the twic or hazmat first. There is a difference both (all) ways in cost.

If you do the hazmat background first then your twic total cost will be reduced because they will use the comparable background which was done during your hazmat. The twic will be reduced by $24.50 if you do it this way. Your twic will expire 5 years from the date of your hazmat background (because they are using that background check instead of doing a new one). This is in all states. I wish I knew this when I did mine because I would have waited to get the twic after my hazmat.

In the states where they reciprocate then you can do either first and still get a discount, although the discount varies on which you do first. (the Reciprocating states are listed below) If you do the hazmat first then again, read above, your twic will be reduced by $24.50.

If you decide to get your twic first then you will only get a discount on your hazmat application total cost if you are in a reciprocating state (see below). If you get your twic first and you are in a reciprocating state your hazmat will be reduced by no less than $19.50.

you must hold a valid TWIC STA with at least one year remaining before expiration:[TABLE="width: 363, align: center"]

I pretty much made the same mistake, and its going to cost me an extra $25 when I apply for HazMat. That's OK though, because I received my TWIC Card yesterday afternoon and now I'm one step closer to getting what I want. :)

You didn't clear anything up for me. I got my hazmat first in Missouri. Then applied for my twic card and had to pick it up in IL. I got no discount even though I asked about one. Glenn71 did the same thing yet he did get a discount.

Chibob, if you don't get any discount then your twic is valid for the full 5 years. How long did you have your hazmat before getting your twic? Also, I don't know why they wouldn't give you the discount, since it's on their site plain and clear that it's the same background.

    Q. Are the background checks for an HME the same as the background checks conducted for individuals applying for a TWIC STA?
    A. Yes. They have the same eligibility requirements, share a consistent waiver and appeal process, and leverage the same fingerprint-based criminal history records check. As a result, the HME and TWIC STAs have been deemed comparable.
    Q. Do applicants with HMEs have to repeat the STA if they are applying for TWICs?
    A. No. Applicants who apply for a TWIC do not have to pay the full price for the TWIC STA if they apply successful clearance results from their most recent HME STA, and as a result, the fee for the TWIC is reduced by $24.50. All TWIC applicants must pay the fees that cover the other components of the TWIC program, including enrollment and card issuance. Applicants are always offered the option to apply for a full-fee TWIC STA if they determine it is more cost effective to do so.

This what what I could find relevant for you. Off the TSA's site.

Weird Chibob, upon doing a bit more research I found that the only states that don't reciprocate one way or another are:
    Florida
    Kentucky
    Maryland
    Mississippi
    New York
    Pennsylvania
    South Carolina
    Texas
    Virginia
    Wisconsin

That means 39 states participate in the TSA enrollment system, not just the 25 I posted..which was off their site. :biggrin_25510:

I would call (877) 429-7746 between 7am – 9pm EST Mon-Fri. All you can do at this point is ask, because it says you'd have to call for assistance During the application process, seems like it's too late to do anything more than get information at this point.

Actually, I didn't get the discount because like Tech-1, I applied in the reverse order (TWIC then HazMat, instead of Hazmat-TWIC). But the discount is/was there.

No, the other way around. HazMat>TWIC.

    However...

If you are going to go to work in TX, you need to do it all in TX to get the discount. You MUST have TX HazMat to drive in TX, and they do not reciprocate with other states. That means that even though you may have a Hazmat from another state you still have to get a TX HazMat.

This may or may not delay you in finding a job, since it takes up to three weeks to get the TWIC. Some employers will take you on without it, and some won't. If the extra $25 bucks or so doesn't bother you get the TWIC first and save yourself a little time on the back end of your job hunt.

If you are going to stay in your home state then all you need to do is find out if they offer the discount. For that you need to go to the TSA/TWIC website.
