Ok so i've been watching a bunch of youtube videos and reading all over online. Everything seems to be "how to be a trucker for dummies"
Current situation: im broke as a joke

What i seem to be hearing is that a company, such as Swift, will "train" you. I must already have my CDL permit and then they will do a 3 day orientation and I will receive my CDL as long as I pass the road test.

Ok so what I'm getting at is the following

    1. Do I have to pay for this "training/orientation".
    2. If I do have to pay, do I pay in advance.
    3. Do I in fact receive my CDL after this 3 day orientation.
    4. If I pass orientation does that mean the job is mine.
    5. What if I have a previous non-violent felony conviction (i already know I cant get hazmat)

Hopefully someone that has recently gone through this process will be able to help me. Or anyone at all for that matter

Nothings impossible... but that conviction and parole are fairly current. The specific offence may slightly improve your options, or dramatically degrade them.

I'd think you need some distance between this career and a felony charge. Most companies its five years after conviction and/or clearing probation.

    Good luck to you.

There are several companies that will hire you after you complete a CDL school.
There's more to Swifts CDL training than just 3 days. It's a complete CDL school & a good one also. Some attend Swifts school, then don't work for Swift, but move on to a different company. Not sure how they collect the 3 grand from you if you leave though. Also, check with Driver Solutions about their CDL school; Google for it. Sometimes the state unemployment office can arrange a free CDL school for you. Which ever route you choose, be upfront about everything on the application, because they will find out on background checks.

1st things 1st.......that felony ....no matter how old is gonna keep you from being considered by some potential employers.
    1. It may depend on the company....but you will probably have to at the very least be in a position to feed yourself for a few weeks , depending on the length of training.

    2. Again , depending on the company....you may have to pay up-front with some sort of reimbursement plan from them , or they let you pay them back thru payroll deduction after you are trained and working...(this is usually done for at least a 12 month period )

3.No ! you must go thru a training process , (4 to 6/8 weeks normally) Then you will be required to pass a written DOT test , along with a pre/post trip inspection test along with a road test , this is done at the local DMV office usually. You must pay for the CDL and any endorsements that you decide to test for also.

4.It's not a pass/fail thing , you go in and they go over the training schedule, the length of time you'll be training , you'll receive a DOT physical/drug screen ( now failing 1 or both of these is automatic failure and you be sent packing) they will do a more stringent back-ground check on you during this time also....employment record , driving record , criminal record , (this is where "you" may run into some problems depending on your particular issues)

    5. Already covered this one....you can more than likely find work driving...but you will have to understand , that at the very least , in the beginning your choices are gonna be narrowed down some....because of your past.

    Good Luck, hope I helped....Tony

SWIFT is not $3000, its almost $8000, but if you stay with them for 1 year, you don't pay back anything. However, in that 1 year, they'll run you into the ground and you'll expect around $700-900/wk but probably come home with between $400-600/wk. I live in Atlanta, they have a SWIFT terminal there, I know MANY drivers who go this route, and almost ALWAYS regret it.

On the plus side though, they are more lenient to hiring past felons than other companies and you WILL get your CDL about 4-6wks over-the-road training with a trainer who marks grades in your folder AFTER orientation. They do pay 3day orientation I believe, don't quote me on that, check for yourself.
NO. you are not good to go with CDL permit, you MUST drive with a licensed CDL driver first.

Key thing for a felon, when you're a past felon and brand new to this business, and a company gives you a chance and hires you....You cannot pick & choose....you NEED to do atleast 1-2 years with that company to show other companies that your character has changed and that you are a stable driver, if you go looking company to company...you'll need to get your own truck because nobody will want to hire you.

DO NOT fail the drug test or the Road test, if you do, they WILL NOT give you a ticket to get back home, you're on your own. So try and find a company that has a terminal local to where you live.

SWIFT isn't really the best company but because of that and how quickly they put drivers on the road, most beginners go to them.

However, some things people say about SWIFT

Two fa*s In a White Semi* < MEAN but funny
Swing Wide into the ##**ing Trailer* << MEAN but many times true (TRUCK STOPS)
Sure Wish I finished Training* <<< hey....I didn't come up with this stuff

GOOD LUCK BRO #TRUTH KEEP ON TRUCKIN'

Ok so I just go off the phone with Swift. They said they are willing to look past the felony as long as I have my CDL. So now im off to some bootlegged CDL school just to get them to let me use their truck for the driven test at motor vehicle.

Be careful ....some of those places are only there to do one thing...take your money. SLOW DOWN A BIT....try and talk to several companies about their distinctive programs , and see what is available to you. There are drivers and forum members here that can and will give you some great leads in that direction...PM Chinatown....he can get you started.
