My Name is Jason Crank and I am new here. I joined because I am looking for the best fit for me getting started in trucking. I live close to Shreveport La. and do not have any tickets, accidents or criminal record. I am healthy and 37 years old. (I guess trucking might change that.?? So I have heard) I recently talked to CR England and they wanted to give me a bus ticket to Salt Lake City Utah for a driving class, however, around that time I found this site and after reading about them here I decided I needed to ask some of you what advice you would give me if you were in my shoes? I might be able to get some money for a cdl school but I doubt it. No job and money is getting tight.
Thanks for the help, I really need some guidance as to how you guys with experience would get started.

I suggest, get a loan for CDL school. If you pay yourself your not an indentured servant to anyone. Many schools offer pretty good financial aid and decent payment plans. Then sign on with TMC trans since they pay the ost for new drivers. Yes flatbed is more work, but all my trainees make over 1000/week. I made 1200/week when i first started.
BigJayDragon Thanks this. -
THOROUGHLY research this career choice before even thinking about school. Find out the pros and cons, and understand exactly what you'd be getting into. This is not a career for everybody, and many drop out their first year.

thanks for your replies and advice, I am in the research mode, right now and really need to make a good educated decision.

any CDL schools you guys know of that are respected?

Many disagree with me on this, but IMO, as long as the carrier you want to drive for accepts your school. the school doesn't matter. School is to get the CDL. The real training begins when you sign on with a carrier. You do not learn how to safely drive a truck in cdl school, all you learn i enough to barely pass the road test. I'd select the cheapest school nearby that the carrier your interested in accepts. It worked for me. Now I own my own rig and make the big bucks.
That being said, your location isnt listed in your profile so we cant recommend one nearby.BigJayDragon Thanks this. -

Diesel Driving Acatomy is in your area. dda.edu
TMC (my recommendation) hires from that school. If TMC hires from them, they must be half way decentBigJayDragon and 123456 Thank this. -

SVTN hires new CDL grads. Ask them which school they prefer. Their nearest terminal to you is St. Gabriel. Tanker and flatbed pays the most annually. Prime Inc. has CDL school and flatbed division. Schneider hires new CDL grads for tanker division.
Prepare early by studying for the endorsements:tanker/hazmat and apply for TWIC. If you want Canada runs, get a passport. Study all the practice CDL tests on this website; click on CDL Practice Tests, at the top of this page.
