I have been approached with the offer to drive a truck for someone that has no clue about O/O. He was told by a driver that he made $10k on a run to Cali. Now this guy thinks every load will pay that and he can make 3 runs/mo grossing $350k/yr.. Please help and post guess-timates of real world gross revenues along with what area hauling your guesstimate is based upon IE--car hauler, flatbed, reefer, dry, and especially OS/HH. He is a show-me guy so I would like to "show" him info from ppl in the know. Thank you very much for your opinion.
EDIT--I have done considerable calculations RE- fuel, ins., permits, repairs, ..... that is why I am asking gross. I welcome net figures but was reluctant to ask feeling this might be too intrusive.. Thanks

Yup he can get runs paying $10k to Cali. But, he ain't going to get 3 a month...period. He's going to be lucky to get 1 a month.

and besides. You don't want to look at gross, if you only look at gros then everyone would want to own a truck

EVERY type of trucking work is different, and every driver that is in that segment of trucking is going to have a different answer.
In the heavy haul area of trucking only $350K gross would be a BAD BAD yr.
A team hauling general van freight would be doing OK to gross $350K. -
I run VERY specialized "white glove" frieght and can get somewhat close to that 10k number from northern MS to northen California under the right circumstances. Depends on what type of "extra" handling requirements are involved. We will do just about anything that our clients require for a price. The typical trip from our main customer in northern MS to say Carmel,CA would pay $7500 +/-. The thing to keep in mind is the backhaul won't pay half of that depending on what time of year. So the round trip would be right around 10k. 99% of all carriers could never charge those kinds of rates for that lane, but 99.9% of all carriers could NOT provide the type of service that we do, or provide the equipment that we do. On the flipside of the equation, my costs are probably close to double what most carriers costs are due to the extra equipment built into our trailers, paying a premium wage to hire and keep drivers qualified to service our customers in a manner that they are accustomed to, and increased cargo insurance coverage, and special liability coverage to cover our drivers when they enter our clients property(which we all know most residences aren't designed to accomodate a rig).
In my opinion, AVERAGING the kind of numbers you are talking about is a pipe dream. But if you do find a way to turn those kinds of gross revs.,the expenses will be escalated and thus bring the net back down to earth. -
$350k gross is going to have some SERIOUS overhead.
Even heavy haulers (who have great gross figures) need to purchase permits, hire escorts, increase maintanance intervals, and super size everything, motor, axles, transmission, etc.
Then, they either deadhead back at ZERO dollars. Or sit for days trying to find a load going back.
Some of the best paying accounts for HouseHold Movers... Military personel (Officers) and their belongings being transfered between bases, is seasonal. The winter months are very lean most of the time. And these guys can sit for a week or more at a time on the other end.
Consumer Electronics pay good also. But, how many shows can you do a year realistically?? 10 shows over 10 weeks may only cover 1000 miles. That 10K is going to include a LOT of heavy lifting and unloading.
