We lost a trailer in NJ when a tractor went down, and the trailer was parked in so-called secure circumstances.
Some people feel that stealing is their way of redistributing wealth, and insurance companies are the only ones who pay for it.
We all pay for it
Related to this, I was in Lake Station at the TA, which has security that is decent, and had to take my tractor to South Bend to a lease affiliate, because the lease company thought it would be safer for their tractor.
The lease facility in South Bend had no gates that worked, and wasn't staffed at night, and I was told by them that it was a dumb thing to park in their lot as they had been victimized by battery thieves similar to what was happening in this case. I told them I was only doing what I was told, and they said,OK, park in as bright of an area as you possibly can, and the truck started when I got back.
The under the drive shaft battery location is a mixed curse, harder to work on also makes it harder to steal batteries.
On another note, criminals stealing with paper or by other fraud probably do far more monetary damage than physically stealing things, and those thefts are even harder to prosecute or remedy.
