Reefer is most versatile. Therefore better miles

 

You get more miles with refers and more problems to go with it,I don't know how much longer those so called good miles are going to mater Since the DOT has started this panic about hours of service ,electronic logs & such So I would go for the dry goods and save my self the aggravation of the refer breakdown's and load temp and the Cold storage warehouse problems.Besides summer is almost over and the refers are going to be taking more dry freight whenever they can to survive the winter.

 

It's all the same. I'm on the dry side, and never lack for freight and miles. What counts is you running the freight in a timely manner-if you do that, your dispatcher is going to keep you busy.

And on the dry side, you will have fewer grocery warehouses and 3 AM appointments. You will get some, but not as many as refer.

I've done both, and much prefer the dry side.

 

Is there still many wasted hours spent hunting for empty trailers on the dry side?

 

It all depends on the company. A large drop and hook company that is not running a 3-to-1 ratio is going to be a challenge.

Big mileage based carriers it shouldn't matter between reefer and dry box. You should be able to get the miles if you are reliable. Most that have issues in companies that have miles have reliability issues and dispatcher won't put you on a critical load.

 

Not as often as previously. It still happens, but they have gotten better, it seems, knowing where the m/t's are.

 

I worked the dry side of Knight but carried reefers b4 working there.

I would guess that reefer drivers spend a lot of time live loading/unloading & waiting to dock, but little time looking for MT's, as they often keep loading/unloading the same trailer, with the exception of grocery loads which are usually pre-loaded.

Whereas, on the dry side, often much time would be spent looking for MT's, but then about 1/3 of their loads are usually drop & hook.

Reefer drivers could carry dry freight when times were lean; whereas, you never saw a Red tractor pulling a Knight reefer even if MT...Knight insisted on reefer training b4 allowing a driver to pull one.
