How tough are doubles and triples to pull, in reality? Does it take a big adjustment for most people?

How much work is it to obtain the doubles/triples endorsement? Hours of study, or days?

Neither is that hard, IMO. Getting the endorsement or pulling them. I pulled double covered wagons for a few weeks before I told them I no longer wanted to do it. The reason being was the steel mills I went to would require me to drop one wagon, then back in and load just one. Then go back out and get the other and back it in and load it. They wouldn't allow me to back both in. That gets old quick when you go to these slow as molasses steel mills where it takes them 2 hours to even think about letting you back into a doorway.

I guess if you can get a good run that pays well they'd be worth the effort. To me, it was just a hassle.

The doubles and triples endorsements are pretty simple provided you use some common sense and actually read that particular section in your manual.

As for actually pulling them its not tough at all. First of all a set of doubles will corner tighter than a regular tractor trailer. Normally you will never have to back up a set of doubles or triples although some drivers can back them up (doubles anyway) when they absolutely have to.

As the previous poster stated there are multiple drop and hooks to do and that can be a hassle as can the wasted time at a shipper or receiver if your'e not in a linehaul position.

For earnings purposes linehaul drivers that pull doubles and triples are usually the highest paid drivers on the roads today due to the job usually being union.

I think I get it then--it is not the pulling of the doubles and triples, it is the " landing " which takes extra time. That extra time makes it less attractive.

So driving doubles then it is usually a "drive thru" style when loading and unloading?? What's the cost involved in getting this endorsment

    Dabber:

I'll wait for the vet drivers to answer conclusively, but from what I have read, the endorsements--as a group--do not cost extra money, just the extra time in reading and studying. That is why some of the vet drivers have said " get as many as you can ".

Still waiting for some vets to answer, of course....

    This is FUN!:biggrin_2551:

Endorsements here usually costs like $3 more--guess it depends on what your state charges and what the endorsement is. Mine costs me $3 for each endorsement--need to check with your local DMV but i think the doubles was the easiest one in my opinion. Good luck!

Texas only charges to reissue your CDL with the endorsement. $10.00

Im trying to remember what they cost...don't think it was much at all. The Hazmat is a big one as it involves the prints and a background check, although Im trying to figure out of I have to do that or not as I had a background check as a teacher in 06 when I got hired here in WY...not sure if I need to do another one or not.
