sorry, but you ask me, I think that's ###### crap meaning peanuts for your hardship. you might think 3 grand a week clear is a lot, but it's not much more than a GOOD JOB can get you, and you won't be on 14 day 12 hrs per straight roughing it out in some godforsaken hellhole. your life is meant to be lived not traded so cheaply for some green that you'll only blow on your time off just to keep you sane for the next rotation. don't you have a girl you d rather be with ? or find a decent one if you dont ? I make half that, Im home every night, weekends holidays off, Im happy as heck with my wife and kids. don t sell yourself short, dont sell your life. it's good you want out of a rut, great in fact, keep pushing, nothing will ever happen if you never try. best of luck to you, whichever way you choose.oilfield Thanks this. -

Life involves trade offs and compromises.
Working in the patch, with its long hours and time away from home, is a unique lifestyle thats hard to comprehend if youve never done it. The payoff is the huge $$ compared to working a regular Monday to Friday job. Every family has to make its own decisions in this regard, according to their own personal family and financial situation. IMHO, most in the patch sometimes question whether the money is worth it.
I have an elderly neighbour who spent his entire working life in the oilfield, married to the same woman for 50 years. They jokingly credit the longevity of their marriage to the fact that he spent a lot of time working away from home. So, theres more than one way of looking at it.oilfield Thanks this. -
Most mid level operator jobs with class 1, some application, trainable, personal effort, reliability, and a solid work ethic.

True, I spent 20 years in factories working for peanuts, home every night kinda deal, but there is no paying jobs for me at home so I come to Alberta for my 15/6 shift. Been doing it a year and a half now, it's not easy on the family but I will be mortgage free in 4 years, just bought an investment property and should be retired when I am 50, or at least doing what I want to do on my own schedule and that opens up more opportunities for a great family life.

My oilfield job pays around $100 k gives me a company truck, the opportunity to travel around the world. If I had stuck with diesel mechanics I'd probably be lucky to get $40 an hour and maybe make shift supervisor. For that wonderful pay id have to explain myself for every stupid little job that went five minutes over book time. Id also have to invest 20-30, 000 in tools. For which I would get next to no tax deduction even I have to buy the tools to do the job. While I do spend time away in bigger chunks, I also have bigger chunks of home time. Now if we had kids I'd want to have a bit more balanced schedule but I'll take the oilfield over 9 to 5 every time

Yeah I've probably had less than 20 days of Canadian work this year. Working in the USA we don't get to come home just because the job is finished. You get to hang out in a hotel and wait if anything else is booked in the next week. Definitely higher workload down there. Trying to keep maintenance up away from base and shop is a struggle too.
