Hey guys I have a question about whether or not I should buy a truck and trailer and go work in oilfields of ND hauling crude oil or sand (which I do now but with a company truck). I have heard from guys around here that you can make $10k to $13k a week with your own truck, which sounds unbelievable! Right now I'm bringing home $1600 a week (I could make more with a different company but I like where I am with this company).
The problem is that, in order to have the money to pay for the truck and trailer, I would have to sell my house. I don't live in it since it is my second house, just rent it out for a somewhat modest but very steady income. However I have a real emotional attachment to it (it has to do with family and let's just say that it represents something that if I get rid of I will never be able to get back).
Should I sell this house in order to pay for the truck? What I'm worried about is that once I get up there, there are going to be lots of up front costs and fees and payments that I didn't know about and it will eat all my money to the point that I'm just working to make ends meet and I will have sold something that I really love for nothing.
What kinds of costs do you have to pay (fees, insurance, that kind of stuff) that eat into your profits? How much money do you bring home every week? Do people pay you on time or is there the possibility of really getting screwed over if I do this?
Any help and information would be really helpful.

baha Thanks this. -
If you're able to read, you should have seen that i said i currently work there and have for years. reading is fundamental, "dontchya think?"

If the real-estate is paid off and generating positive income I'd keep it. Or maybe use it a collateral , if you have to buy a truck..... Can't help you with the oil fields....

I hear it both ways.....some say they make a killing, but I see a lot that go back to whatever they were doing before. Figure $1000 to get your authority, if you hire it out, $2000 ish for licensing, $550 for 2290, and about $9000/ year for insurance, more if you're doing large liability, on-location stuff or hazmat. I would never probably sell real estate to buy a truck. Just my opinion. If its paid for, maybe do an equity loan. I would also figure at least $2000/month in maintenance for oilfield work.

Thanks for the advice. I heard from a couple guys lately that they only really make about $20k more a year than I do, but they seem really rushed and stressed and I don't worry about anything at my job. I can't see going through all that stress for really not that much more money...but maybe some people just like to be stressed out?

weather its a good idea or not is going to depend a lot on who you know and what kind of contacts you have.

not to mention the wear and tear on your truck, lots of money on repairs, roads will tear them up

I think you're nuts. You're making $1600 a week driving someone else's problem and have a rental paying additional income (for life I might add). That truck you buy will probably be wore out and dead in 5-6 years while your house will still be there producing income. I know little about North Dakota oilfield work other than an associate went up there 5 years ago and made a killing. I'd think long and hard about it though before I quit my day job and let it all ride on lucky 7.
