I spent a couple years as a "bed bugger" for the now defunct Smyth Van Lines. Moving furniture can be the most physically challenging of all the trucking jobs. Learn good technique for lifting.
Get a "hump strap" and learn how to really use it. You can carry large and heavy furniture by yourself with just your legs bearing the weight. The finest worker I ever hired for picking up a van load at a mansion used a hump strap to carry the refrigerator, upright piano, couches, and big bureau's all by himself without leaving a scratch on the furniture or the staircase walls. I paid him a nice tip on top of the hourly I promised him because he was worth two workers and taught me a lot that day. -
I haven't received my first paycheck yet. Pay is by the load so I am hoping that the two loads I already did paid well.
The job is very physical. I never lifted so much in my life. You're carrying heavy furniture throughout homes. Best part about it is the tips.GeorgeDee Thanks this. -
TIPS???? NICE.. by LOAD do you mean the whole truck load...like many stops until the trucks finished. I was told the driviers go out as a team and stay out for 3 days.. as far as I can tell they are closed sunday ..so there would be 2 loads a week??? do you drive a straight truck or a tractor trailer combe...sorry for my questions..i just passed my urine test for them and hopefully will be starting soon out here on the East Coast based out of North Carolina. thanks

George, welcome aboard!
I would say 1 out of 5 customers tip. Some trips I've made 15 dollars total in tips, some trips I've made 50. Hoping for more : )
They use both class A and class C vehicles. My first trip was in a class A truck and my last two were in Class C vehicles. You are sent where you're needed at the time, but keep in mind the company really needs class A drivers, bigger loads means more money for you. My first trip was a week long trip through several Northwestern states...I got my check today and it was the biggest single paycheck I have ever received in my life.
Be prepared to do a lot of work, you won't have much time off but the money is worth it, and unless some other job that pays better and gives me more home time appears from thin air, I am staying with HEP for now. I am really happy with my first paycheck
But as I said. Prepare to work. You move furniture all day every day for about 6 days a week. But when that check comes in, you'll be glad you did it!GeorgeDee Thanks this. -
Thanks! I'm looking forward to working for hep. It sounds like a good fit for me as all my other jobs were labor intensive and had long hours but I also had to think smart on the fly. I called the drug testing company and asked how long it would take to get the results to hep and they said that hep has the results, that she confirmed were negative for fun. How long did it take you to get put to work from the day you applied. I filled out my application and had my interview the first day and took my urine test the next morning it has only been a week since I took the test. I'm anxious to get to work.

It took me two weeks. Keep in mind, you are entering different customers houses sometimes up to 10 times a day or more. They need to make absolutely sure your background is clear.
GeorgeDee Thanks this. -
That makes sense..thanks
